Yup. But the OP likely has a modem/router combo box from ComCast, which they charge extra for. Basic modem is usually around $5 per month whereas a combo modem router is usually around $9 per month (I've seen some bills as high as $14 mo with various ISP's). Change service to basic modem, buy your own (and usually better) router, save some $$$.

The switch brings up another issue: Is it really just a simple switch? Or is it a switch/hub? If operated as a hub it can cause such DHCP issues.
As you suggest, a switch is cheap. $20 for a 5 port switch would be on the high end.
