I've give up on it now since it doesn't want to run on my system (ubuntu 14.04, recent LMS 7.9) any more. I just run a separate copy of squeezelite.
@Tim did you add the user squeezeboxserver to the audio group?
Mine runs like it should on Debian jessie/sid.

Yes, I did. It used to work, but something somewhere has changed. It's not important, since I run it when I need it (using a command I set up using the "server power control" plugin).
    LMS 8.1 on PC, Xubuntu 20.04, FLACs 16->24 bit, 44.1->192kbps. 2 Touches & EDO.
LMS plugin UPnP/DLNA Bridge to MF M1 CLiC (A308CR amp & ESLs) & Marantz CR603 UPnP renderers.
Also Minimserver & Upplay to same & to upmpdcli/mpd PC renderers.
Squeezelite to Meridian USB Explorer DAC to PC speakers/headphones.
Wireless Xubuntu 20.04 laptop firefox/upplay or Android mobile with Squeeze-Ctrl/BubbleUPnP controls LMS/Minimserver.

    I'm running Windows 10.

It did work on my old PC - also running Windows 10 - but it simply doesn't show up anywhere in the plugins area...just as another device in the 'Player' section of the Web LMS (but not in the Control Panel).

    Hope that makes sense!

Perhaps someone could guide me how I should install it from scratch, and I'll try that...

    sorry not for me.

you installed the plugin the player is active so everything is fine?
Dont know if the playerportion is was listed in the controlpanel (you mean the lms thing near the clock?)
It should be listed in the pluginspane from the lms webgui not somewhere else.

    Hallo
I try to get it to run in my Synology NAS DS211+ with DMS 6.0 installed. I installed the official Synology LMS package (Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.0 - 1453293926) and installed this plugin via the Plugins site in settings.
I selected the proper binaries (see synology-wiki.de/index.php/Welchen_Prozessortyp_besitzt_mein_System%3F) but it is not starting.
Even the Log shows only (it adds the same entry with each restart of LMS)
    Starting Squeezelite: /volume1/@appstore/SqueezeCenter/Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/LocalPlayer/Bin/squeezelite-armv5te -d all=debug -f /volume1/@appstore/SqueezeCenter/Logs/localplayer.log
Is there any way to figure out, why it's not starting?

Usually you need a DAC and under most *ux systems the user that runs lms must be memebr of the group audio.

You need lame and libmad0, libflac8 to run squeezelite.
    whats inside your /volume1/@appstore/SqueezeCenter/Logs/localplayer.log ?

    ok that's the reason
I can get lame via Ipkg but it seems I have to build libmad0, libflac8 by my own on the NAS.
Will see how I can do that (any suggestions?).

How will I know if Local Player accepted all my installations?

Can you get any sorts of audio at all directly on your NAS ? Do you plan to connect a DAC or USB speakers to the NAS ?

localplayer is "just" a plugin with some (very usefull) gimmicks around squeezelite.
You can just use that squeezelite binary with
    path/to/squeezelite &
to check for errors and or
    path/to/squeezelite -l &
    to check for your audiodevices.
