As there's currently no easy way back, I better don't tell you how to go
there. But it's in the wiki already, how to install a custom firmware. If
you know what you're doing...

Thanks Ben,
as an outsider this is exactly, 1000 percent how imagine this happened.
Yeah great new product after 3 years, get he same radio, put another sticker on it and cut down functionality. Plus moreless show everybody who supported the SBs the middlefinger.
But from what you wrote, SBs actually made money, so why change it?
Whoever makes these decisions should be looking for a new job.
Why did Logitech buy Slimdevices? They wanted to sell boxes, well they did - with no marketing at all, god knows how they would have sold with marketing. So why is it neglected like this?LMS 7.9.0 - 1470391720 on Pi2 (Max2play)

I would suggest it's the same reason many good things change. Someone wants to make a mark, or someone wants more. There was also at one point a fairly sizable source of 'free' labour. That, too, was given the death of a thousand cuts (and why this is my first post in years).
Best of luck. It may not be a move that the long-running fan base may like, but it's better than making no move at all.
cheers,
kdf

I hope You have a plan Erland :-)
Scenario: Logitech runs LMS/mysqueezebox.com for a couple of years, then makes LMS open source and helps move everything onto Amazon Cloud. Logitech could even give www.mysqueezebox.com to the community as they won't be using the name anymore. But who will pay for hosting?Vote for "Nap feature": http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14208
Sboxes: Duet, Classic, Radio, 2 Boom's
Server: HP Laptop, Core i5-540M, 4Gb DDR3, WOL (Wake-on-lan), 1.7watt suspended, Windows 7, LMS 7.7

Office: Win8(64) > LMS 7.9.1 > Squeezelite
Spares: Transporter, Touch(3), Radio(3), Boom, SB3, CONTROLLER
Controllers: iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng & Squeezepad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) laptop

Remote Control + Streaming to your iPad? Squeezebox + iPad = SqueezePad

The Logitech site doesn't appear to feature *any* Squeezeboxes now. There was a Touch bundle this morning.

I, too, want to thank Michael that he got this open discussion rolling.
Now, looking at this I'm a bit split:
On the plus side, I DO see that the technical changes make sense, it's not fully how I would approach this, but it's a decent way. If I was under the impression that there was a decent effort behind it I would congratulate to the decision. The same is true for using the UE branch which at least seems to know how to promote products these days.
On the negative side: The whole introduction scenario clearly shows that Logitech still has no idea what they are doing and in what market they are working. They are leaving their installed customer base and developer base behind, pissing them off and not even offering them an upgrade path. All while having an incomplete new product offering that has no value proposition as it is now. This way, the product will be dead soon. It's a bit like watching Twitter committing suicide right now, quite a number of parallels to be seen.
I believe now it's up to us as a community to show that there is a value in us and that we can keep the old platform alive or make something new out of it. We've always claimed that the product is not dependent only upon Logitech and I still firmly believe that.---
