    5.4 release candidate

    All,

The current nightly build of SlimServer
    (http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/) is a candidate
for an upcoming version 5.4 release. If you're interested in testing out
the build, please do so and post feedback to the list.

A caveat about this build - it actively modifies player menu preferences
in your slimserver.pref file. If you later revert back to an older
release version of SlimServer, your menu preferences may be in a bad
state. If you do intend to revert back to an older version, please back
up your slimserver.pref preferences file before getting the 5.4 release
candidate. (Windows users will find slimserver.pref in the server
subdirectory of their SlimServer installation. Mac users will find
    slimserver.pref in /Library/SlimDevices or ~/Library/SlimDevices
depending on their installation mode - All Users or Current User. Linux
users will find their preferences file at /etc/slimserver.conf.)

A summary of the change log for this release includes:

    * Menu changes:
o The home menu has been simplified and shortened. The
top-level items are Now Playing, Browse Music, Search Music,
Playlists, Internet Radio, Settings and Plugins.
o Plugins are now placed in different menu categories - Games,
Screensavers, Internet Radio, etc. The Internet Radio plugin
category is now at the top-level.
o As always, player menu preferences can be customized using
    the web interface.
    * Radio plugins:
o New plugin: Slim Devices Picks.
o New plugin: Live365 Internet Radio is now part of the
    default installation.
o Shoutcast Internet Radio and radioio remain with small
    improvements.
    * New streaming formats:
o Ogg streaming is now available on all platforms. Create a
playlist file pointing at an Ogg radio station and enjoy
    your vorbis.
o Windows Media streaming (including ASX and WPL playlist
parsing) is now available on Windows.
    * Softsqueeze 1.10:
o Music search contributed by Brian Hein (alpha status).
    o Simpler configuration dialog.
    o Several bug fixes.
    * Firmware 40:
o Fix a problem with 32 character long SSIDs.
o When reconnecting, the player tells the server if it
rebooted. The server will now only restart streams if the
    player has rebooted.
    * Various bug fixes and improvements

Received my Squeezebox today and have just updated to 5.4 - I can
already see that there are some major improvements over 5.3.1. All I'd
like now is the BBC Radio plugin for WinXP!

Everything seems to be working well, except that I got this message when
I changed and updated plugins immediately after re-starting on 5.4:

New value for Live365 password rejected:
    Invalid value specified:
New value for Live365 username rejected:
    Invalid value specified:

After de-selecting Live365 and clicking Change, then re-selecting it and
clicking Change, I didn't get the error message.

Thanks, Bill. This will be fixed in the nightly build available on
    Tuesday 10/26.

    running slimserver at higher priority

Well, now I've got a Squeezebox, and it looks fantastic.
Much sexier in the flesh (plastic) than the pictures.

Slimserver is transcoding FLAC (to PCM I hope)
and sending it through 10/100 switched ethernet.
Occasionally I get 1 and 2 second dropouts.

It is unlikely to be network,
it must be slimserver not keeping up.

Server is a 1 Gig VIA Eden processor,
Should be enough to uncompress FLAC.
All the other tasks are probably causing delays.

Things seemed to go better when I didn't have KDE running.
It had a few processes running at -10,
maybe they were blocking slimserver at 0?

Since it's such a real-time thing keeping the bits flowing
    shouldn't I run slimserver at a higher priority, say -12 ?

    Anyone experimented with this?

I had a 5.3 system running with several players OK and just updated to
5.4 26 Oct build . The SliMP3's are OK but the Squeezebox prompted for
a firmware update and it completed succesfully (v40). I was then
presented with the SlimDevices boot graphic and "Welcome to Squeezebox"
followed by "To begin setup... " which I duly did using the same stored
static IP and wired network that this player has always used. But the
player now just loops in this sequence of power on graphic > Welcome >
Begin Setup > cycling through the 3. All the IP address settings are
correct and the server has been found (at least is showing in the
current network settings). The player worked before on recent 5.3 ? Any
    ideas ??

    Kevin,

I saw this behaviour too (SB re-booting several times when firmware was
    upgaded).

I simply left it alone when prompted "To begin setup" and it eventually
booted correctly and started working (after about 3-4 re-boots).

Hmm - Thanks Richard this set me on the right track to a solution - I
had left this for a good hour, even tried powering down the SqueezeBox
and also changing its IP and restarting the SlimServer - didn't get
anywhere it still looped. Last thing I tried I stopped the SlimServer
and unplugged the Ethernet cable from the Squeezebox which then
displayed a 'Can't find the SlimServer' or 'Lost contact with server' or
similar message. Restarted SlimServer and then reconnected Ethernet
cable to SB "Right arrow to try again" did nothing :-( so I left
arrowed as the only option and went through the setup yet again, didn't
change any values, and it has worked... (I may have power cycled SB
again after reconnecting cable) - very strange , there is a definite
gremlin here though I feel in wired Ethernet.. Was yours wired Richard
?. I have now just updated a wireless SqueezeBox and this has rebooted
    correctly first time.

    running slimserver at higher priority

I still have the same problem with the Live365 plugin as I wrote about
recently. Plugin functions (loading genres, etc), but will not play a
stream ("Playlist Empty"). It must not be parsing the stream url correctly.

I didn't get an asx stream to play for me (WinXP SP2).
I put the following url into a m3u file :http://love.str3am.com/asx/xpn.asx
After pressing play, the Now Playing shows the stream name - stopped (1 of
    1) 00:00

I'd be interested in hearing if others get these two features to work for
    them.
