OK, I see now. I primarily wanted to be sure that my stream wasn't going out at the default low volume
without my being able to control it or even know about it.
I've only been able to succeed once in getting my stream to a friend who was monitoring it, and when he
got it he said it was barely audible. I made sure the volume in winamp AND in my WinXP Vol.Control were
all set to the maximum. Then the listener emailed me that it was much better.

the default for clients with volume control is 50%.

changing your own winamp settings has no effect on a remote listener. The
person using their own copy of winamp would have the only volume control over
the stream.

the volume control from slimserver is simply telling the hardware how to process
the stream for otuput level. for winamp, the stream is exactly the same but
the server has no ability to tell winamp what level of output to use. Winamp
itself controls that wherever its being used.
