I feel all alone here, but never mind!
Moira Smiley is a singer and arranger, with an outstanding body of work. I came to her through Jayme Stone's Lomax Project, where she joined with a bunch of top flight musicians to bring to life a series of Lomax-documented traditional folk.
Her work with the vocal group Voco is usually almost acappela, including this new one. With male voices (a new addition for Voco), this steers into new territory. Mesmerizing.
Also a great cover.

I'm listening to Carnage, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis's new album. It's released in May, but is on all major streaming services already.

This morning, I'm listening to For the first time by Black Country, New Road, which I picked up recently at Bandcamp. This one's a definite grower.

I've posted this before, but since it just won the Grammy for best large jazz orchestra recording, and for jazz song composition, I was listening to it tonight and will post it again.
Maria Schneider is an interesting wonder. Her work is generally thought of as jazz, although it has a lot of classical-type resonance, aside from the improvisational solos of the various truly excellent musicians. There are times I'm really reminded of the work of Heitor Villa Lobos, especially his pieces for small numbers of players, like Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6 for flute and bassoon. But Schneider's work has undulating orchestral swells as a background.
She HAS won Grammys before, several times in jazz, in classical (Winter Morning Walks, with soprano Dawn Upshaw) and in pop/rock (for her work with David Bowie on Nothing Has Changed). Yet she remains largely unknown to the broader populace, a great shame.
It's easy to leave loved music behind, there is so much new (and new to me) around that it's tempting to just sample the flow. But some music deserves to be listened to again and again. And then after a while repeat. Schneider's music is of that sort.

It’s nice to revisit albums from time to time. This has the makings of an enduring classic. FLAC from Qobuz
