I got Anatomy of a Song from the library (the digital epub version), and have been reading it. It had great reviews in various places. Based on a series of columns for the Wall Street Journal (I think), it's basically the story of a series of prominent songs from the early 50s through the 70s (and maybe a bit beyond). Each essay summarizes the song and its impact, and then has first-person recountings of the creation of the song from the artists and songwriters and producers and others "who were there". It's quite compelling if you had experience of that era of popular music, totally boomerville, but should be interesting to anyone who wants to understand the roots of modern pop.

    But it needed a soundtrack.

Turns out there is a Spotify playlist with all 45 songs on it, in order (but the order has at least one mistake). I have taken the author's recommendation, and am trying to listen to a song before I read the piece on it and then after. It's a revelation, reading the discussion of how a song was made, e.g. when the bass was added, a vocal track accidentally erased and then re-recorded, an astounding success dismissed by a singer for her own "second rate" performance -- and then listening to the track and hearing the song with new ears and understanding.

Recommended (both the book and the playlist).
