Is SB Touch + speakers > SB Boom?

    Howdy y'all,

I've got a bunch of SB Booms scattered around my house, but I'm giving some thought to replacing one of them with a Touch and powered speakers (Audioengine A2's). I should add that I really don't have much in the way of a music collection -- I use my Booms just for listening to music via internet radio and Pandora streams. My question is this -- Would the Touch & speakers be a significant step up, in terms of audio quality, from the Boom, given my limited purposes ('net radio & Pandora)? I'd appreciate any insight y'all can offer on this.

    Thnx,

    Johnny Baby

    Howdy y'all,

The Boom inexpensively provides adequate sound with a small and convenient form factor. What you're proposing is essentially the same thing done with different hardware.

Internet radio streams and Pandora are low quality sound sources. Will spending a bit more money for new equipment change that? No, but you may prefer how it sounds. Or you may not.

    Before I offer my opinion:
    - Goodsounds sums up the benefits of the Boom very well
    - I've never heard the A2's
    - I love my Boom
    - Like you, most of my SB usage is Internet Radio and Music Services
    - With very few exceptions I do not stream sources offering below 128k
    - Did I mention I love my Boom?

I use my Touch with A5's for entertaining on our deck and for use as a mobile audio system, most recently utilized for our neighborhood block party. The audio difference is night & day compared to the Boom. Even indoors the A5's far outshine the Boom, particularly at higher volumes.

Knowing the quality of AudioEngine's and having far better stereo separation with separate speakers I'd bet Touch + A2's would be noticeably superior in over all audio quality, even using Internet Radio and Music Services.

Beyond the audio difference, a couple more Touch benefits over the Boom:
    - easier menu navigation, displays four items per menu (Boom offers only one item), particularly helpful if you jump around to several different services
    - touch-screen keyboard is a GODSEND for text entry searches
    - album art (if offered and if you care)

But you also must keep in mind that you are comparing two very different systems at very different price points with the Boom being very mobile and much less expensive.

I'd surely give the Touch + A2 setup a try, compare for yourself. At least that's my extremely biased opinion.

Thanks, guys, for your feedback, it's very helpful. I'm inclined to go ahead and get the Touch; I may splurge a bit on the speakers and get A5's rather than A2's.

And I love my Booms too!

    Thnx again....

Touch sounds *very* nice with the A5's.

If you stick to the higher bitrate and better quality streams I am certain you will hear a difference over the (very good sounding) Boom.
