Blasphemy? Has anyone considered a WinAmp plugin to controlSqueezebox/Slimp3??

I may be the odd guy out, but I am frustrated by slimservers' limited ability
to manage and manipulate playlists (i.e. "smart playlist" capabilities,
ratings filters, modifying/converting underlying MP3 files, breaking "radio
streams" into individual MP3 files, changing tag information, etc)...as well
as the lack of "dsp enhancement" molules such as the ability to crossfade
    tracks or simulate surround sound.

All these capabilities are already built into WinAmp plugins. All that would
need to be done to bolster Slim Devices and their hardware products to take
advantage of all this is to enable the Squeezebox/Slimp3 to be a "controllable
player" through an "ouput plugin" for WinAmp. In my own situation, I would
love to use Squeezeboes throught my house in a "whole house" audio system
controlled by wireless notebooks and web-tablets running WinAmp.

I was able to simulate this by using Shoutcast to broadcast my WinAmp output
as a "radio staion" on my local network and connecting to that stream output
via slimserver, streaming to a Squeezebox. Although it was a good theoretical
exercies and worked - the latency of the Shoutcast server and network "Qos"
issues made this useless for ongoing/regular use in a local LAN where instant
    response is expected.

From what I can see as a causal observer (I'm not well versed in the technical
details of WinAmp), NullSoft encourages plugin development by third
parties...and why not leverage on the plethora of existing plugins already
available for WinAmp, including crossfading, 3d surround, etc.?

What would it take to develop a WinAmp plugin that would have WinAmp directly
output to Squeezebox(s)/Slimp3(s) (rather than through a Shoutcast server) and
to have the play, pause, stop, rewind, etc. control various Squeezebox/Slimp3
    device functions?

If you use an old version of shoutcast (pre 1.6 I think) the latency
issue is eliminated. Old versions did not have any buffer built into the
server. If you are having trouble finding a copy (do a google search for
it) I think I have a local copy I can put on my web site.

p.s. this version has security bugs so should not be run without
ensuring the outside world cant access it.

    John,

    Thanks.

I searched the net and did fine that version 1.7 has a 3 second buffer as
opposed to the current version, which is 40 seconds. But I can't find 1.6 or
    1.7 on the net anywhere.

I would really appreciate it if I could take you up on your offer to post it
for me. I run XP and Win2000 on the media box.

Thanks again for the generous offer.

    Randy
