Slightly OT: Idea for an iPhone Universal Remote

Using iPeng on my iPhone has made me wish I could control my whole HT/stereo with my iPhone. I realize there is nothing available at present, but wouldn't it be possible to design an app to do this? It would require one additional piece of hardware that hooked up to your local network and could send out IR commands, but it seems possible right? Doesn't Logitech/Harmony seem well suited to implement this?

Also, it might not be the ideal solution, but I think it might even be possible to design the app to use the SB hardware. (I understand that you can send IR commands from an SB3 via the headphone out.)

BTW for background I currently use a Harmony 880 and have lots of complaints about it: the time set problem, the display and tilt sensor both wearing out (and I've had two with the same issues), the slow response of some commands, etc.

There are quite a few plugins like IRBlaster that control other HW through SqueezeCenter. The next iPeng version will support plugins so, yes, it's supposed to evolve into that direction.

With the IRBlaster plugin and an ir emitter, you can turn the stereo
on/off and adjust volume with iPeng (or really any other app). Did
you want more than this? If so IRBlaster would probably be a good
    place to start.

I am working on an SB On/Off and volume control plugin for the Denon AVP via Ethernet, but there aren't many systems that can communicate in this manner.

I plan on using iPeng with this plugin so I can control my AVP with the iPod Touch and the songs with iPeng.

I still have to learn Perl a bit more too :-(

Yeah, I want to control my TV, satellite box, both DVD players and Xbox 360 as well. I want a real universal remote (replacing my harmony 880) via my iPhone. I think the idea has a lot of potential.

Of course eventually, all components will be networked and this will be easy and won't require additional hardware, but for now it seems like you'd need something like IR blaster.
