Hm, I got a lot of "can't write to /etc/slimserver.conf" errors so I
    chmod 777 /etc (I'm inside a firewall). Now I'm getting a lot of the
following errors when I try to play a song ...

Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
    /usr/local/slimserver/Slim/Player/Source.pm line 191.

    and

Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at
    /usr/local/slimserver/Slim/Player/Source.pm line 732.

I'm about ready to reinstall Fedora and start from scratch!

Looks like you may have to. Those are odd errors to get, and certainly point to
    a complex permission problem.

Hmm, I see that concatenation of uninitialized string error regularly
on my Fedora system. I just ignored it, and figured if it ever
bothered me, I'd chase it down in the source.

Line 191 is one thing. Thats just buffer. line 732 has to do with file and type
information. That's the one that is problematic. of course, that's just my opinion.
