BBC article: "Copying CDs could be made legal"

Copying music from a CD to a home computer could be made legal under new proposals from the UK government.

I just saw that article. A remarkable display of common sense.

That's not how I read it. It sounded to me that it would only be illegal if you sold the original after making the copy. Makes sense to me.

Sensible ideas, perhaps like this quote from a related article

"Some have pointed out that fast-forwarding through the ads at the start of a DVD now contravenes the law."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3256945.stm

But still, it does seem like a step in the right direction, although how they will police this section I do not know:

"Owners would not be allowed to sell or give away their original discs once they had made a copy."

Maybe if we go to a used CD store, a SWAT team will raid our house to see if the disc we have just handed over is stored on any computer or ipod!!!!!!!

Also, it says you won't be allowed to copy DRM enabled tracks. Now that would suck if I had any DRM enabled tracks .....

Has anyone come up with a good solution to what to do with all the CDs? I don't want them in my living room any more, and don't want to store 1000s of CDs either, they take up so much space!

Get rid of the jewelcases and you'll save a lot of space.

Thanks for that link. Been thinking about doing this myself - I need the space. As I have posted elsewhere- remember to check if your jewel cases are recyclable - many of them are.
