    library not loading!Please help!

    Hello everyone.

I have a Dell Poweredge Server running Windows 2003 Server and 2 GBs of RAM. My music consists of about 80,000 tracks in MP3 and flac formats using 2 USB external hard drives for about 800 GB of external storage.

Up until about 2 days ago, I had never once had a problem. I upgraded to 6.5.4 and everything upgraded fine with the exception of the scanner. I ran task manager and saw that scanner was using about 1 GB of RAM, the after an hour, I got a prompt saying that I was running low on virtual memory. I then stopped scanner and restarted slimserver. I had 0 files in the library. I restarted the box. Same process, hangs after an hour.

I needed to rebuild the box, so I went ahead a rebuilt with fresh win2k3 and 6.5.3 - Same behavior.

I can go into the music folders with Slimserver and all the folders are there and I can manually add them to the library, just can scan them in the normal scanner fashion.

    Any ideas? thanks, Bill

Try looking through your library for shortcuts that link back to
another folder. Many attempts have been made to fix this problem, but
it does seem to find a way to keep coming back.

Alternatively, you can take a closer look at what is going on with the
scan by using a command prompt (start->programs->accessories)

    c:\program files\slimserver\server\scanner.exe --d_import --d_scan --d_info

This will show you what is being scanned and what info is being
extracted. That may help you locate any looping.

    I got the following error:

Faulting application scanner.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module perl58.dll, version 5.8.8.820, fault address 0x00085bc1.

    and

The application, C:\PROGRA~1\SLIMSE~1\server\scanner.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 07/23/2007 @ 09:02:20.937 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 28085BC1 (perl58!Perl_stashpv_hvname_match)

So how can I address the Perl58 issue?

    thanks, bill

Unfortunately, you cannot directly deal with the perl58 problem as the
    scanner.exe file is a pre-packaged perl application.

Installing ActivePerl from ActiveState.com will allow you to run
slimserver.pl and scanner.pl manually. That might avoid the crash.

Regardless, you should report this to support (AT) slimdevices (DOT) com or
record an bug report at bugs.slimdevices.com (requires a separate sign
up from this forum). Someone at SD with a duplicate of your system can
    then hopefully reproduce the crash.

    cheers,

Ok - I think I got it working!

A Combination of the following did it:

    1. Installed Perl (don't know if this had any effect)
    2. Changed the server permissions on the drives
    3. dropped the music share one level down from the root

This probably wasn't part of the fix if you are still running the EXE
installed application. Although, I'm not sure if the perl58.dll would
be something that would get replaced as opposed to being directly
    contained within the slim.exe/scanner.exe applications.

Still, very good that you got it. It would be interesting to know
what in your root folder would have been causing a problem, that is if
it wasn't just the server permissions.
