Are you kidding? Auth/Capture is commonplace. With smaller companies I'm quite sure it's the rule. They don't have the systems (software) in place to coordinate the shipping phase of order completion with online credit card transactions that may have taken place days ago.
In any case, it's not applicable to this situation. The _real_ fly-by-night operations (there are many thousands) use PayPal, for all the insecurity and inconvenience that you come to expect in a shady business venture.

Yes, it is the norm for manually entered or swiped transactions, which is what most mom & pops would do. But systems which accept orders for physical shipped goods should not capture immediately when the user enters their card info, and to my knowldge none do. That would be really bad for a lot of other reasons. I totally missed the bit about paypal, and thought that he had placed a credit card order.

Poor business practice
Actually, I do not think they have intentionally ripped me off.
A $100.00 Fiji vacation...I'll wait for the postcard.
According to Paypal, the buyer has the option to to file a claim against the transaction and therefore is mediated by them (Paypal) and refund issued if claim is judged valid.
I have the claim filed.
Not as worried about the $$$ as I am irritated at the proprietors wasting my time.
ok, I'm off to purchase some magnet wire and start my own flakey business.
It looks lucrative from my view.
Anybody in need of some audio-fabulistic-dubisarial-wash-your-car-cook-your-dinner-leave-your-wife-make-you-popular speaker cables?
Step right up.

Hi Steve,
Actually, I ordered the cables early last week.
Not much of a lead time I know, but what concerns me is the lack of response from the Speltz's when I inquire about the order or ask for acknowledgement that they have received my order.
There was no receipt issued...not even a "go to hell were busy".
They haven't replied to Paypal on the claim either.

This just in...
David-
Got your order for 2- 5ft sets of cables. I will put our new copper spades
on the ends with should accomodate both your Vandersteen and the B&K. The
spades fit standard and wide binding posts. This will ship tomorrow,
Wednesday, via USPS Priority Mail, delivery is 3 business days.
I apologize for the delayed response. We had a family issue in Canada to
which we had to fly out of here very quickly, but all is well and we're back
filling orders. I appreciate your patience.
Thanks,
Judy
ok...I cancelled the Paypal claim.
So much for my new business.
;-)

just not minding my on business as usual...
I had dropped an email to David Speltz about the negative press over here, just cause I had previously only heard good stuff about him and their cables. Just got a response from him:
Dale,
I very much appreciate the heads up. I understand his concern, as we did
disappear for 4 days. We have a very close family member in the hospital on
Toronto Canada. We simply dropped everything and went up to visit her. We
arrived home late last night, and will be playing catch-up all this week. If
he calls 651-735-0534 today, there is a good chance Judy will be available
to answer his call.
It would be great if you could convey this info to the form, as I do not
have the time to chime in.
Thanks!
Paul

Thanks for "butting in".
Nice to know that above all, this forum is genuine.
Maybe some hack here can show them how to setup an autoresponse on their email system.
Cheers to the forum!

I've ordered from them twice and they have dispatched fairly promptly. Paul Speltz even did a custom i/c for me (I had to send him the rather unusual termination). So I don't think there's anything untoward. Perhaps, as someone said, it's just down to the 'cottage industry' scale - which can be affected significantly by anything from a holiday to the flu...

The Speltzes advertise and sell on Audiogon too. Try contacting them through their email link on that site. Maybe they monitor that one more closely.
