Cannot compile v2006-08-12

Trying to use build-perl-modules on my linux server for the latest nightly. However encounter following error:
Can't locate auto/Compress/Zlib/autosplit.ix in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/slimserver/CPAN CPAN /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.4 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8 /usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at /usr/share/perl/5.8/AutoLoader.pm line 160, <STDIN> line 3.
Any suggestions?

Do you have libzlib.so or .a and a zlib.h installed?

I'll admit to being a newbie, and probably should head back to 6.3. I can't seem to get zlib using apt-get install.... Thanks anyway.
