    Squeezebox2 v.11 DHCP weirdness

Trying to configure my DHCP server to dish out a fixed address to my squeezebox turned out to be a little less trivial than I expected.

The label on the unit and the MAC address received over the wireless network is 00:04:20:05:ae:0a. However, inside the DHCP discover messages sent by the squeezebox2 the "Client MAC address" is: 20:04:b4:00:00:0c.

For a full packet dump see: http://www.knigma.org.uk/scratch/dhcp_weird.txt

Where's this client MAC address from? Any insights appreciated?

It means I have to put this address in dhcpd.conf rather than the one I would have expected.

Do you have any bridges? Many times that can cause much confusion.

No, no bridges. dhcp server is also the wireless access point.

This is odd. 20:04:b4:00:00:0c is not a registered MAC address (20:04:b4 is not in the ethernet database).

Perhaps an update to the firmware will resolve, or a reset?

My ethereal output shows correct values for the client mac address; your unit clearly is misbehaving.

    Squeezebox2 v.11 DHCP weirdness

It looks like you got hit with the MAC address corruption bug.

You can edit it back from the initial setup screens by navigating to
View Current Settings -> MAC address and press RIGHT.

Then I recommend you upgrade to SlimServer 6.1 which will prompt you
to upgrade your firmware. The new firmware contains some fixes that
should make the corruption less likely in the future.

Strangely the front panel still showed the correct 00:04... MAC address. However some combination of a factory reset and changing the MAC address to something else and then back seems to have cured the odd behaviour. Just going through the "edit MAC" screen without changing the 00:04... number did not fix it.

    Thanks for the hint!!
