If you are getting the default Openpeak/O2 user interface then it is not booting from the USB stick but is still booting from the device firmware.
So ... you then need to go through the extra step of putting in a USB hub and then attaching a USB keyboard and the USB memory stick to it and interrupting the boot ...

I think this is because the previous owner did not let their system update 6 years or so ago when the new firmware was made available.

Oh, sorry, Paul... no joy with waggling the escape key etc. I wonder if there's any other route I can try?

You could plug it into ethernet and see if you can telnet or ssh into it.
I had a very early model (pre-O2 release to their shops) and it had ssh (I think) open with id root and no password.
Not sure what to do after that but if it is open then it is a start.

Alternatives (as on the birdslikewires site) is to try other USB sticks just in case it is a USB timing issue.

OK, think I'm done for today. Or done in, to be more accurate.

Did try three or four USB sticks and all no joy.

I don't know how to telnet or ssh, I'm afraid. Is it worth a try?

I suspect it will not work ... but it is worth a try.
However, I am not the right person to give advice on how to do it from a Mac.

What does the screen look like when it boots?

OK - that is the O2 interface and it is showing the right time - so it has an internet connection.

Yes, as I said, thatĺs what I thought was strange, the time/date is correct but none of the apps like News and Weather show current stuff.

Many (probably most) of the back-end services that it uses were turned off years ago.
I know that my old company disabled the calendar server long long ago.
