I have no problems playing mp3s or other audio files on my home stereo using the
slimserver/squeezebox, but I would like to be able to have the audio feed from a
dvd/avi go to my home stereo instead of my PC speakers. Is this possible with the
slimserver and if so how can I do this?

While often requested, this feature is not available. The consensus seems
to be that the hardware could theoretically support this type of operation,
but it's not currently the focus of the software development track.

However it might be possible (a similar solution works on a Mac, but
I don't know about a PC) to use software to capture the sound and
broadcast it as an Internet radio station. This broadcast could then
be picked up, though it might need some effort to do so.

Good point--though you'll likely have some synch issues--I had (incorrectly)
immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was referring to DD 5.1 audio.
