I think I still have an original Quad pre-amp in the attic.

Lucky boy, but without the matching power amps it's getting you nowhere - it's powered from a power amp!

You can still find complete sets

    At a price!

A Squeezebox feeding a Quad 303 Power Amp or a 33/303 Pre and Power Amp would be a nice project.

This is Quad's first transistor setup, and much sought after.

    Try that instead, Carp.

    See Quad restorers in Germany:

Think Copland have integrated amps with valves.

Interesting... I have an original 303 serving as a paperweight.

On topic: A vintage Luxman LV105 can be found for around $500. If you want more valves/tubes you can find a Luxman A3500 for twice that amount. Advantage of these amps is that the tubes are encased, but still visible, so they are more kid- and pet friendly.

The Q303 sound is very similar to the QII amps, but with more firm bass oompf. I would recommend it if you want a "tube" sound.
They are a bit old now so a refurb is necessary. There are different options here.
