squeezeAMP unstable - is there a system log to view?

Just recently, I've been having a few problems with my squeezeAMP. When I power it up, it boots rapidly and becomes visible to LMS. I can play music. However it soon stops playing (after a variable period, often less than an hour, and becomes invisible to LMS - I assume Squeezelite has stopped. It still shows up as being attached to my router, but the squeezeAMP admin web page doesn't load, and pings sent to the device's IP don't reach it.

Is there a system log I can access to see what may be happening?

    - it's just a bare board, not in a case or with any battery attached
    - powered by a regular 5V USB adapter (have tried more than one of these and a 6V DC adapter).
    - audio output is via SPDIF output to an external DAC (I have the -R flag set in Audio - Optional Settings as recommended by Philippe some months ago)
    - fw: SqueezeAmp.16.689.master-cmake, mode: SqueezeAmp. (I've tried various other firmware versions)

It doesn't seem to depend on file format being played. LMS is Version: 8.1.2 - 1622353561 @ Sun May 30 09:04:30 CEST 2021, and it's running on a Raspberry Pi, pCP 7.0.1. All other players are working fine.

Edit: Just trying with I2C-headphone output instead of SPDIF

You can follow the log via telnet or serial.
The system tab on the web interface has a setting under services called "Telnet server. Use only for troubleshooting", which should better read "where do you want the log to go?"
Choices are Disabled, Telnet only, and Telnet and Serial.

I, too, have rare instances of my homebrew Squeezelite-ESP32 systems losing connection. Of course there is no use to look for the log via telnet after the fact. But also loggin continuously via telnet doesn't reveal anything. It seems the connection is lost before anything unusual is logged.
So far I haven't made to effort to hook up a serial cable to follow a system go down.

It looks a little awkward to follow events via telnet, when the period between system start and the squeezeAMP stopping is variable and a little unpredictable...

In the meantime, I have flashed it with fw: SqueezeAmp.16.654.master-cmake, mode: squeezelite (dated 14th April) and it has been running fine for over 3.5h so far this morning.

Update: now been running for about 10h with no problems.

I've had my SqueezeAMP (running SqueezeAmp.16.654.master-cmake, mode: squeezelite) playing music for 14h now, with no issues. So I'm concluding my recent issues with SqueezeAMP stopping and requiring a reboot are associated with 1.689 and 1.681.

    Anyway all is now good.

argh... not good news then but thanks for investigating. Is there any chance you could try to play the same format all the time to see if there is a correlation?

The SqueezeAMP (running 654) has been playing a mix of mp3 and flac (16/44.1) for 23h without a break now. But I'm not sure what you are asking - I could reflash the device to 1.689 and try playing a variety of formats if that's what you're asking. Or indeed reflash with successively newer firmware versions until the issue surfaces.

But when I was running that version before, I couldn't detect an obvious pattern related to file format (or whether I used SPDIF or headphone output). Most of my music files are 16/44/1 flac files with some higher resolution flacs, or mp3s. Nor could I predict when the device would stop playing.

As it stands just now, I seem to be back with a stable SqueezeAMP!

I was thinking about going back to 689 an only playing simple formats like mp3 and flac and nothing else and see how long it holds

OK, well my experience was that I would get a variable duration, usually part-way through an album. I tried a variety of flac formats and mp3 because I wondered if it was an issue to do with flac format. But as I recall it sometimes dropped from LMS without playing. Still had an allocated IP address on my network, but didn't respond to pings.

I may be able to try this out tomorrow - I'll get back to you. With 654 my squeezeAMP is rock solid.

I installed 689 and set up a 16/44.1 flac playlist - SqueezeAMP managed about 45 minutes before disappearing from LMS (and its management web page also disappeared). This playlist shouldn't present a problem for SqueezeAMP.

I power cycled it and I have it not playing anything just now, and I'll see what happens. Well, it sat there idle for about 1h40m. I then started the same playlist as above, and it died within about 10 minutes.

I don't think this has clarified anything.

I have flashed the squeezeAMP with firmware 665, and it has played through over 1h30m of 16/44.1 flac files.

AFAICT, my problems start with 681. And if I am the only person reporting this, I suspect it doesn't merit much more investigation...
