I second active speakers. I bought a ex-demo pair of Acoustic Energy AE1's and the sound is absolutely stunning, as all the 5 star reviews suggest. They give you four 50w amplifiers, active crossover and bi-amped ceramic cones in gorgeous emclosure's. All you will need is a pair of interconnects from the Touch and you are good to go. No way you could put together a pre-amp, amplifier and speakers of that quality for the price. Simple. elegant, compact, wife friendly and you can listen all day (I do!) without getting fatigued. I run mine from a DAC32 but the Touch will give you the same results.

I've successfully used one of these with a Squeezebox Touch....

    https://www.amazon.com/A3-Digital-Am...s%2C241&sr=8-1

It sounds fine with bookshelf speakers.

I second the powered speaker suggestion. At my weekend cottage I use these connected to a touch and I'm very pleased. It more than fills the main living space of about 30 feet by 20 feet. I think they exceed your stated budget however.

On the other hand, I'd recommend these sources to look for the best amplifiers or active speakers:
Audioscience review: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/f...pment_Reviews/ (for instance, look into "Electronics Index" tab and filter for Speaker amplifiers), choose a model that is recommended
    What Hi-Fi: https://www.whathifi.com/awards/2020

Audioscience I trust more, but you cannot go wrong with What hi-fi
Thanks for the links was not aware of those sites...

That looks good. I see several like that on Amazon and leaning towards something like that along with some bookshelf speakers.

When you guys were talking about active speakers I thought you meant pc speakers (what I am using now ) but I see now how things have changed. Some of those in the pics look really nice but probably too big for my space.

Following a recommendation here I recently picked up one of these to run an old pair of Kef Coda 7 I had doing nothing.

I paid a little less on Fleabay and if you can wait for a Chinese delivery they're available with PSU for as low as ú25.

Connected to an LMS equipped PC in a study sounds way better than I'd have got from a similar amount spent on a dedicated set of PC speakers.

I took a punt on one of these:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nobsound-Bl...ef_=ast_sto_dp

It's a Class D, with a valve front end. Very compact, sounds remarkably good paired with a set of Tannoy Eclipse book shelf speakers. The bluetooth functionality is useful too.

For the money I'd recommend it.

It is actually cheaper to buy it from Amazon USA plus delivery to UK.

OK I found some very small bookshelf speakers and they should be on the way soon. Good for 40 watts which is plenty for me.

Now just have to find the amp and I am set. I was going to ask if any of these smaller amps have tuners but other than internet outage it is not really needed.

    Thanks for the links

Oh and as a long time Ham, I had no idea they were still making anything with tubes!
