Tips for organizing your media for LMS??

Now that I have LMS, I am trying to figure out the best way to organize my media and get everything in 1 central location.

The issue I am having specifically is that I have MP4 music videos from Dick Clark, Casey Kasem and others. I know that Pure LMS clients can't do them but VLC via upnp does.
But I have noticed that LMS clients will still try to play them and of course that doesn't work

Those of you with mp4's do you let lms see them or do you keep them out of the DB?

    Thanks.

Move them from the LMS default music directory.
    Anything else?

Maybe LMS would be able to play them - the audio part - with the right transcoder in place on the LMS server.

If one of those files is readily available on the Internet perhaps you could post a link for others to try.

    My structure is

    Media
    Then

    Music/FLAC/artist/album
    Music/mp3/artist/album
    Music/mp4/artist/album
    Music/videos/artist/album
    Films/filmname

In LMS I point it at the first 3 but not 4 or 5

    On a Plex server
I point it at 4 and 5 but IF I wanted Plex to also serve music Iĺd point at just Media in total

In Windows or Mac everything is there under media

My mp4 folder is music only

MEPG-4 has lots of possible variation for audio and video.

ffmpeg can do it something if audio is in AAC 2chan format "-vn -acodec copy -f adts" - no video, copy audio and send it as AAC in ADTS forma

However if audio is not in AAC format - then explicit conversion would be needed. Still possible.

If the MP4 track have separate audio & video tracks. An audio is in M4A format and probably are streamable (i.e. "faststart" - all metadata etc at start of file before mdat) - then it should be possible for current LMS MP4 handler to be extended to identify the audio track and ignore the video track.

Thank you I will take a look at that once I get my all my media into one main share. The problem is I have like 20+ years of unsorted media that came from old pc's .

LMS is finally a good reason to get this done and stop procrastinating. Did a bunch last night but more to do.

VLC with that upnp plugin works well so having second thought if I should exclude anything. Decisions ..Decisions..

This is a great system that is so flexible- they were crazy to abandon it.
