Request for Synology to upgrade LMS package to version (8.x)

    Hello:

I would like you to help me for Synology to support new LMS 8.x. Last week, I was talking to Synology support about upgrading LMS to version 8.x. They told me they will not update LMS versions from Jun 30th 2020. The LMS package was in EOL (End Of Line) phase 2 state. Support people told me there were no updates/upgrades for this package. I told them this was not true from last December. In last December LMS was upgraded to new 8.x version. Then they told me to fill an upgrade request:

I an writing the web page where you can make the request to keep the updates/upgrades for Synology of the Logitech media Server (LMS) package:

    https://www.synology.com/en-global/form/inquiry/feature

    Multimedia—> Logitech media Server

You have to fill the request. And you can show them there is a new version of the package here:

    https://www.mysqueezebox.com/download?langoverride=EN

It is very important because at this time LMS is not included in the Synology packages DSM 6.x

    Thanks for your cooperation

    Regards

    JP

Unfortunatel Synology hadn't updated their package for years. The
updates you saw were contributed by community memeber pinkdot, and they
were based on Synology's package. Now that Synology has removed the
package from their offering, it has become "impossible" for pinkdot to
    continue to provide updated packages.

I believe Synology announced the end of LMS more than a year ago. If
they haven't changed their mind by now, I doubt they will. I tried to
reach out to them to discuss packaging LMS years ago (long before the
announced end), but they showed no interest.

    Hi Michael:

Thank you very much for your answer. I am sorry to hear you this.

They stopped to support LMS, on June, 30th 2020 (EOL Phase 2). Anyway you/Logitech have a very important upgrade Version 8.x.

Support Synology people told me to do the request. But as you explain, I don’t know if they are interested in LMS

Do they know you have the new 8.x version?

    Regards

I doubt it. They never even officially released anything beyond 7.7.6.
Even the 7.9 package they had was beta only.

I imagine Synology support people are the same as customer support everywhere else. All they can do is copy and paste an answer (any answer, not necessarily the question you asked) and hope for the best. I once managed to obtain a replacement pair of laces for a pair of deck shoes through customer support but they had no idea how to remove the old ones or how to fit the new ones even after seeing photos of the shoes they produced.

Yes, you are right. But now, you (and Logitech) have a very important upgrade 8.x. I think (but I am not sure), some people use Synology as NAS brand, because LMS package.

In some Spanish audio forums, there are people who say that the day you get tired of LMS, the software will cease to exist.

By the way Michael, what will be a new good hardware substitute for running LMS? Picoreplayer? I have an Squeezebox 3 (SB3) from 2007, and it works very well. I only changed two power supplies. In fact I have another one stored.

Thank you very much for your support and help.

I understand you. In fact the customer support and the developers are in different places. I talked to a customer support member to explain him, there was an important upgrade (8.x). He told me he contacted with developers telling him there no was such a version. Then he told me to send the request form :-(.

If you want to keep using your Synology as a NAS then your best option is a Raspberry Pi running piCorePlayer and LMS pointed at the files on Synology.
Not very difficult to do at all.
See in Unix / Linux for piCorePlayer documentation
    VB2.4 storage QNAP TS419p (NFS)

    Office Joggler & Pi3 -> Denon RCD N8 -> Celestion F10s
    Dining Room SB Boom
Kitchen UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio)
    Bedroom (Bedside) Pi Zero+DAC ->ToppingTP21 ->AKG Headphones

Thank you very much d6jg. If Synology does not upgrade to 8.x or when I have to change my NAS, probably I will change to PiCorePlayer. There are some very positive opinions about this system. Or Perhaps, I will do the change on my next holidays.

Can you instal Docker on your Synology NAS? If so you can run an LMS container within Docker. It works perfectly - no need to rely upon Synology’s versions any more

    HB
    1 x Duet, 3 x Yamaha Restio, 3 x Radio, 2 x Touch with iPeng 9 served by Synology DS2419+, Docker and LMS 8.2.0
