    Recently Synology announced LMS would not be supported on the DiskStation.
    I fortunately discovered a Rasberry PI solution with PiCore Player.
    Now I run LMS on the PI and point it to my library on the NAS.
    I have a redundant Ipad from my son (How times change when the parent gets the kids cast offs.) and found Material - Excellent by the way.
    Decided to join the 21st Century and set it up better.

    Can't decide if I prefer the 2 separate lists for Artists and Album Artists or the 1 List. Still getting my head round the tagging side for this.

    Have managed to get rid of lots of albums in the Compilation list that weren't really Various Artists but had the Compilation tag set as you pointed out earlier.
    The Playlist Manager is an interesting plugin as you would think it’s primary purpose is to create and manage playlists which it is but the author conveniently supplies some examples to use with it - Bad Tags, Bad Cover etc
    Very useful for making a note of things that need correcting when you find them while playing to go back to later.
    Once installed it’s accessed in Material via ...more.

    To provide another option; I use the compilation tag for recordings that are either;
    - from different artists (I leave album artist blank)
    - from same artist (for example Beatles 1) where the recording is like a best of album (I tag album artist as Beatles). That way, the album shows up under Beatles as well as under compilations.

    The great thing about LMS and tagging is that you have options and can select what is best for you. Regarding compilations I prefer to stick closely to the wikipedia definition;

    A compilation album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers. If by one artist, then generally the tracks were not originally intended for release together as a single work, but may be collected together as a greatest hits album or box set. If from several performers, there may be a theme, topic, time period, or genre which links the tracks, or they may have been intended for release as a single work—such as a tribute album. When the tracks are by the same recording artist, the album may be referred to as a retrospective album or an anthology.

    As you say there is massive flexibility in LMS to suit ones individual preferences.

    If I am "talking" music then my definition of compilation follows the Wikipedia one quite closely and I would agree that Beatles 1 is a compilation but I have it under The Beatles not under Compilations in LMS.
    As with all things there are some examples of anomalies in that Wikipedia definition as there are in any definition - Pink Floyd's Endless River springs to mind. It's a bunch of outtakes, unfinished tracks and some new recordings put together to finish the tracks and make a new album. Is it a compilation or an official release. I have it indexed only under Pink Floyd either way.

    Then there is the age old question of ArtistSort where one can debate the pros and cons of a particular strategy forever and a day. If only we had time on our hands to do so....

    I put 'albumartist' tags on everything. I put comp=1 tags on whatever I want LMS to think is a comp. but strictly speaking, that's just a preference, not necessary.

    A lot of bands have an album called best of, or greatest hits, etc... bc I also use other software, not just LMS, I put the band name in parentheses after, so the album tag would read like this:

    Greatest Hits (INXS)

    This works as expected in all software, and comp tags aren't needed, (and I don't assign comp tags to single artist comp discs anyway, or to a disc that is basically a single artist disc, but with a guest artist on however many tracks)

    This is an anathema to some, it looks ugly to them or seems like a kludge, but I love it, makes things easy and immediately obvious for me. I listen to music, I don't care how pretty it's labeled. Finding things quickly and keeping things from getting conflated and well organized and categorized looks good to me. Ymmv.

    For a long time, I've been juggling an issue with the Browsing function in LMS for Various Artists albums.

    The default behavior seems to be that if you want the songs on compilation albums to be listed under each of the artists names, you need to leave the Album Artist blank and the Compilation Tag = No. If you don’t do that, the only artists who have their songs listed from compilation albums are the ones where you also have at least one album by that artist. But if you use it that way, then if you look at the Album view, it has a separate listing for each artist on the album, and of course, the album is not listed under Various Artists. So it would seem that one needs to make a choice between having the album properly listed vs. having the songs listed under the name of the artist.

    Just to be clear, If I have 3 songs by The Supremes, all of which are from compilation albums, I want those songs listed under “The Supremes,” but I also want the compilation albums to be listed under “Various Artists” and have each of those compilation album only listed once in the Album menu. I can't find any setting or combination of settings that achieves this.

    Any ideas?

    That's not what I see.
    An example
    Car Songs - The 70's - no album artist tagged, compilation tag not present.

    Track from same e.g. More, More, More by Andrea True Connection appears in Artists under Andrea True Connection. I have no other tracks by them.
    The album appears in Compilations / Various Artists

    NB. The compilation tag is NOT PRESENT not set to No. Could that be the difference?

    The difference could also be with the "use single list of artists" option at the top of your screen shot.

    p.s. As far as I know, there is never a reason to include the tag COMPILATION with a value of "0" (i.e., NO). I've heard of issues caused by this. COMPILATION tag field should either have a value of "1" or the tag field should not exist at all.

    It's entirely possible that "use single list of artists" could be the solution, but I don't have that option. What version of LMS are you using? I'm on 7.7.6 and I've been afraid to upgrade beyond that because I don't want to lose use of the Custom Skip and Dynamic Playlist plugins.

    Not sure, but I suspect you need to be on at least 7.9.x. Maybe update to the newest 7.9 version, and your plugins will likely still work. (the dynamic playlist plugin works for me on my LMS 8.1.2 version).

    Are you also using Custom Skip on 8.1.2?
