The Joggler skin should be the correct solution. If the Artwork is good, they can use it, I think.
There is only the main menu that should be stripped a little bit. I don't know which things can be all switched off.

    ANNOUNCE: piCorePlayer 7.0.0

There's the piGridSkin - optimized for the Pi's original 7" display
(like Joggler), but with larger artwork.

It's probably easiest to connect a keyboard to the device, then hit the
+ key on the far right of it. That should bring up a context menu from
    where you can hide things.

My experience with kids using the Radio around that age is that they're
not so much into messing around, but they want to find "their pictures"
as quickly as possible. I used a Library View in LMS to create a "Kids"
menu, which had nothing but their albums in it. "Kids" (or rather
"Kinder" :-)) they were able to identify long before they could read it.
But that's all they needed. From their they scrolled up and down and
    were happy.

I initially wanted to write a plugin and what not to make the system
kids proof. But in the end they learned quicker than I was able to come
    up with something useful.

That is also my experience. I think it was yesterday that they played with their iPod touch and now they are learning English, Latin and French and are using computers.

I think I also meant the "Grid Skin (800x480)", as that is what I am using the whole time.

Just make sure to run a backup after you change the screen layouts. Backup can be done from the pCP web interface, or you can do it from the piCorePlayer applet from within jivelite.

Just to say, this was a fresh image, set as player only, no extensions, only the File System expanded to 500MB

    Library deleted rather than rescanned

Having added new albums I've now had two instances where, when I select 'Look for new and changed media files', the entire library is deleted rather than being rescanned. In trying to recover this, selecting 'Clear library and rescan everything' does nothing. If I reboot the server from the LMS page it does nothing either. I have to shut down completely (power-down) after which it does then rescan completely.

Do you have any thoughts on what may have gone wrong and how I can stop this?

Where are your music library files located? On a attached USB drive? On a NAS, or ??? From what you describe it is as if the rPi doesn't see your file locations at the time you try to rescan. And at a complete re-start, it is "finding" the files again.

The files are on a NAS. We did have a power cut which upset the ip address of the Pi running LMS server. I then fixed this in the router settings by linking the ip address to the MAC. The address of the NAS was already fix in this way, so the Pi should have still had the correct address for the NAS.
