Try it with a Raspberry pi OS Lite image and install squeezelite

This is the overlay

Name: merus-amp
Info: Configures the merus-amp audio card
Load: dtoverlay=merus-amp
Params: <None>

In the product manual it also advises to remove the default on board overlay, but you can read that for yourself
