    The Phono input might be something! There is a weird fault in my amp that makes all the channels linked. My squeezebox is plugged in my VID2 input for example. But when i switch to VID3 or Phono, i hear my Squeezebox as well! Maybe this has something to do with the problem!
    Sounds like "crosstalk" to me. A function of amplifier design and cost, generally speaking.

    there used to be a device (called Frankenstein, I think) to add crosstalk (present in phono cartridges) to the output of a DAC to enhance it's "analogue" sound

    Hmm if the volume is greatly reduced when the other inputs are selected I would agree with you. The OP gave no indication of relative volumes which might have been useful. Still doesn't explain why "fixed 100% volume" fixed it.
