I suddenly feel the need to rip downloaded Spotify files to MP3 or FLAC, so I can play them outside of the Spotify app. However, I have no idea which is the best app to use on a Mac. A simple Google search brings up a myriad of different apps (though I suspect many are basically the same, just rebranded), but which ones are reputable and worth using?

Doesn't answer the Q. No need to schoolmarm here. If he wants to 'break the rules' on something so trivial, that's his business. I seriously doubt everyone here has a CD for everything they have as a file.
Using: Win10 64 + LMS 8 & Duet & ipads w/the logitech app, and ipeng on an ipod

One is not required to have a CD for every digital file. Digital files are also made available for purchase directly (see, for example, HDTracks, Bandcamp, Amazon, Dead.net, etc., etc.) And some are available legally for free (see Archive.org).
And while I'm wearing my "school marm" wig, I'd also say that stealing music is not trivial. It is stealing from the musicians we all benefit from. And this has become even more of an issue in recent years.Home: Pi4B-8GB/pCP7.x/4TB>LMS 8.1.x>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet)
