If some program requires more memory than available as core the system
slows down, goes swapping and so on. This is not what happens here. The perl
process disappears with a snap. So I think it is a request (likely from
XS) to allocate an amount of memory that is impossible, i.e. more than
    core+swap.

    Spotty is v2.3.3, helper is
    Cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/SpottyAARCH64Bin/Bin/spotty-custom (v0.11.0).

In the Spotty settings I can only choose between Normal, High and Extreme.
    Is that what you mean?

In Settings/Advanced/File Types I see (attachment).

Wow... you're way behind! Spotty is at 2.8.6, the helper at 0.20.0.
    Please update.

Well, I thought it was about LMS.

First updated Spotty to 2.8.6. Restart. No difference, it still crashes.

Then updated Spotty Helpers to 0.20.0. Restart. No difference, it still
    crashes.

I've contacted pinkdot for an LMS Update.

Don't wait for him, just do it :-)

    http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108960

And did you try the various streaming formats with the updated helper, too?

    Upgraded to version: 7.9.2 - 0026 (pinkdot).
    No difference, still crashes...

Point of attention: The Synology kits use armv8 architecture for the DS418,
that has a RTD1296 SoC (aarch64). Some time ago you (Michael) built specific
aarch64 binaries for spotty. I do not remember exactly why, but apparently
you cannot always just deploy armv8 binaries on an aarch64.

I did, see my other mail about armv8 versus aarch64.

That's the Spotty Helpers plugin. It seems to be working for you in
    99.9..%, right?

I did use the Spotty Audio settings Low, High and Extreme. They all crash.

But the plot thickens... It seems to crash only when playing to my main
audio device, an old SqueezeBox2. When playing to SqueezeLite there is no
    problem.

    Player Model: Squeezebox Classic
    Player Type: squeezebox2
    Firmware: 137
