How are videos streamed (Why are my MKV not playable)?

I use minidlna on a raspberry to stream my MKV videos to my TV. I also use LMS for streaming audio to my squeezeboxes. I thought about doing the video also with LMS but the videos are not playable on my TV. They are displayed as folders and files, though. I was wondering which part of LMS is doing the streaming, since minidlna works fine with all my files.

I believe it will if you enable the UPnP/DNLA plugin and your TV is DNLA compliant. I recall using LMS to stream video through my BD player a long time ago.

I have this plugin activated already and streaming is not working.

Just to make it clear: minidlna (readymedia) is a nice and small DLNA-server that works well on my Raspberry Pi and other servers. Maybe using this tool in LMS would be possible for a developer.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Perhaps try a different video type - find a small one of one of these
    video/mpeg mpeg mpg mpe
    video/quicktime qt mov
    video/x-msvideo avi
    video/x-sgi-movie movie

Video streaming was added to LMS for a planned Logitech/Google TV product that was pulled before launch more than 5 years ago. So video streaming functionality was "tuned" for that device and IIRC has never been fully supported/tested afterwards and also has not been updated since first implementation so technology may have changed in the meantime.

Thanks for clarifying. I have several TB of video ripped from my DVDs and it is all in MKV (and since that is just a container I am not really sure what exactly they are). So converting is not an option. But my "old" Samsung TV with SmartTV is playing them without problems als as I said minidlna is used for this on the server. Maybe someone wants to use this and fork it as a plugin for LMS.

You could make a very simple mpeg movie file and see if it works.
If it does then it shows that streaming can work to your device - and it is probably the particular content that is causing a problem.

However, whatever the problem ... getting something changed in that area is unlikely unless someone does great diagnostics and pinpoints a problem that is easy to resolve.

If minidlna is working well then ... can you simply leave it running and not worry about LMS?
