    Multiple Artist Tags

Does anyone use multiple artist tags, and do all artist tags show up in your artists list in LMS?

I just started adjusting a few, but only the first artist is shown in my artist list. The multiple artists do appear in the WebUI for the playing track, and when I view tags in LMS it shows them both. I can even navigate to the artist by clicking the name when I find it these other ways, but shouldn't it also show in the main artist list?

Alison Krauss is not listed in artists. Here's the tags from MP3tag:
    Name: RPAK.png
Views: 789
Size: 12.3 KB

Tim Reynolds is not listed in artists:
    Name: DMTR.png
Views: 774
Size: 10.9 KB

I don't think the delimiter setting in LMS applies because there are separate artist tags in the file.

Is it because there's an Album Artist? And Dave Matthews and Robert Plant show up because I have other albums with no album artist? That's got to be it. Album Artist always overrides artist...hmmm. But I'm almost always going to use Album Artist where there are multiple artists because, to my mind, that is for the artist how it is listed on the album cover. Am I thinking backwards?

So what do I have to do to get these extra artists in the artist list?

I want all of these in the Artist list:

    Robert Plant
    Alison Krauss
    Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
    --
    Dave Matthews
    Tim Reynolds
    Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds
    --
    Chet Atkins
    Tommy Emmanuel
    Chet Atkins with Tommy Emmanuel

ARG! I guess I need to make some test files and figure this all out on another computer! Hints welcome...

I have tagged the FLAC files for the same Robert Plant / Alison Krauss CD as you, using JRiver Media Center. There are two Artist tags, and LMS sees them individually under Artists in the web UI and on a Squeeze device.

Yes, I just figured it out that it's the album artist tag I also added that is overriding the two artists. I guess I have to put the combined form as a third artist if I want to see it, too… but do I? Decision, decisions…

I never would have figured it out without writing out this post.

    Curse you, iTunes!!!

I went over my artist tags with a fine tooth comb last week and had them perfect. PERFECT! And it only took 5 or 6 rescans. I added Custom Browse plugin back in over the weekend. Then today I noticed a lot of my artist tags were screwy again. I blamed Custom Browse before realizing it was iTunes fault. Had to fix them all over again. Much faster the second time since it was just a matter of updating tags from JRMC, but still… just when you think iTunes can't get any stupider, the extent of its lameness is further revealed.

Had to vent… carry on, folks!

I use albumartist to specify "Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds" and artist=Dave Matthews\\Tim Reynolds

The album then appears under all 3 entries.

Really? because when I put anything in album artist, it overrides the artist. But I can do artist as "Dave Matthews; Tim Reynolds", and band as "Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds." That works. Anyway, I got it all sorted out now. Just got to keep iTunes and WMP from wrecking it.

    I generally tag as follows:

albumartist= combined artist eg Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds
    artist=Dave Matthews
    artist=Tim Reynolds

This way, whether I browse any of the three I find their solo and combined projects. I've just reconfirmed this behaviour via the LMS web UI. here's an example of the tagging:

That's how I would tag that album as well, but as discussed in another recent thread, there's a potential problem with doing this. When you have an ALBUMARTIST, the ARTISTs are given 'track artist' roles on that album. Due to a quirk (bug) in LMS, unless these artists also have at least one full album in your library, they won't appear in the browse artist list, no matter what your set in the server options.

I don't have a Tim Reynolds Solo Album, but he does appear my browse artists list:
