BBC iplayer Plugin Listen Live 1.6.0 - Error 403 Forbidden usinga Akamai CDN

On the 9th October I noticed that the BBC Listen Live streams were returning error 403 forbidden.

    I am running LMS 7.9.2 (5th October 2018)
    BBC Iplayer Plugin 1.6.0

I am NOT in the UK but use a "Smart DNS" service to use the Listen Live UK streams which have worked without problems thus far.

I then swapped to the "alt-CDN" and with some extended buffering the streams then worked.

I contacted my network provider to see if this was a "glitch".

    They responded by saying that

"Akamai streams are banned, you will have to use limelight counterparts"

    as-dash-uk-live.bbcfmt.hs.llnwd.net
    as-hls-uk-live.bbcfmt.hs.llnwd.net
    aod-dash-uk-live.bbcfmt.hs.llnwd.net
    aod-hls-uk-live.bbcfmt.hs.llnwd.net

I am not sure if this is a tempoary situation.

I thought I would post this in case othrs are seeing this issue.

BBC have been blocking non UK users using UK service via VPNS for many years. This is mainly for TV rather than Radio. SmartDNS is usually the one which BBC blocks most completely.

It sia game of "whack-a-mole" played by BBC and VPNs operators. BBC is constantly searching for VPNs source IPs and then blocks them. SmartDNS VPNs are usually much easier to detect and block.

So is it "temporary" ? It is temporary that it is still working. As BBC (or Akamai) have managed to block VPNs using akamai, I think LLNW will be also be expected to come up with a better blocking strategy.

When "Blocking" does occur - VPN operators reconfigure and try to find an unblocked IP address, users then have to reload/restart their VPN connections and so restore service temporarily until it is blocked again. Repeat cycle.

Yes I understand that would be the case since the BBC outsourced the CDN to Akamai etc al.
Interesting this also now effects BBC programs that are not live streams with extensive buffering and no ability to fast forward as the stream resets.

Anyway, I can listen via not-uk apart from Five Live Sports Extra when they are playing TMS, but has that has gone away for at least 6 months I am not too worried.

I am sure the whack-a-mole will continue as there is money in it.

My post was about awareness rather than looking for solutions.

And just for clarity I am using a SmartDNS solution that does not involve a VPN element so the NordVPN post isn't directly related to what I was seeing ;-)

The title of this thread is much more informative than the other thread. It does the job - makes people aware.
