OK with Pi3 there should be no processing issues and HiFiBerry is widely used.

When you said no messages in the log - did you try enabling player.source logging to INFO like I suggested ?

    Logging to INFO

You asked me to "enable player.source logging to INFO".

I found it. Wow, that was hard to find!

Under Settings > Advanced > Logging, I set Logging to Server. I set player.source to info. I clicked apply, and then when I changed tabs, I clicked Save.

Then I controlled the player through a web browser. I find that the player repeats the offending track, instead of stopping as it did in previous experiments under the control of Orange Squeeze. This happens even though I was careful to ensure that repeat and shuffle were both turned off. I find that there is no information in the server log that I access through Settings > Information. It shows the top three of the following lines many times, then:

When I play a normal folder this way, it progresses normally.

So it appears I have not configured logging as desired.

I have spent hours on this problem now. I am happy to continue working if it helps you better serve the community, but it is not worth more of my effort for my purposes alone....and we seem to think this is a problem only I experience.

Let me know what further you would like me to do. Thank you.

After setting player.source to INFO - did you click Apply ?

If so. note start time of a test, test playing all the track and not time when track stops. Then look at the log between the start time and stop time.

Your log shows you have a lot of network errors - wit LMS loosing connection with internet very frequently (I.e. this could mean loss of connection with router) - this may be upsetting playback.

When you wish to continue looking for the spource of this problem is your call. For this sort of problem unless it is essential - you may prefer to spend your time listening to music (but some people enjoy tracking down problems). As a work around could you splice two or more track togther since they are very short.

    Abandoning Defect Search

    Yes, I did click apply.

Yes, I have constant network errors, because I have the LMS on a Wi-Fi network that is dedicated to music control and does not have internet connection.

Yes, I would rather use the machine than debug the problem with short tracks. Thanks for your assistance in getting me to this point. I will be abandoning further study.
