    pi and Allo BOSS DAC

Recently put this combination to work and while I am thrilled with the sound there is one caveat.

If you power the pi via the DAC you will get an under voltage warning. I asked Allo about this and they were a bit dismissive.

I powered my pi using a 2.4amp 5.1 volt supply and check it with a USB power meter. When powering the rig through the pi, with the DAC getting its power through the GPIO interface, everything was fine.

If I powered the DAC and the pi received its power through the DAC, the pi only received 4.5 volts.

I also checked the 5 volt pins on the J19 plug and they were only 4.5 volts even when powering the DAC directly.

So the moral of the story is power both devices or power the pi, but don't power the BOSS DAC. Even though the Allo support person said this wasn't possible, the meters don't lie.

    Bests,

    Howard

    Hi Edwin,

I have several HiFiBerry DACs picked up over the last few years. I'm not technical enough to talk intelligently about Master vs Slave clocks and multiple clocks, but having read a lot over the years about about jitter and digital noise, the Allo design makes sense to me. So, I thought I'd give it a try.

One thing I do have is a very good ear. I've played musical instruments my entire life and was a Luthier for more than 15 years of my life. I have a 1998 REVOX CD player that I have listen to intently for years. I found the Allo Boss appreciably more musically pleasing.

I'm trying to put together the best player I can without going overboard. I think the Boss DAC fits in there nicely now that I've tried it.

    Have a great day,

    Howard
