    Mplayer on mandrake

Can someone give me a reasonably idiot proof guide to installing mplayer on
    mandrake 10.1

    I have installed alienbbc

I think I've installed lame - although there were checksum errors in the
    package.

However I can't make head or tail out of the PLF stuff for installing
    mplayer on mandrake!!

help, I'm quite new to this linux malarky.

    Rgds,
    Bruce,

I have a tendency to install from the command line so

    1. Make sure you have plf added to your media sources

    2. Open a terminal window and become root

    3. run: urpmi mplayer

    4. If it asks your permission to install other needed packages answer Y

    5. You are done.

You can also do it from mcc (the Mandrake Control Center -- the GUI version)

I'll give it a shot, although the usual way seems to be blocked
    (easyurpmi.plf.org)...

    > I have installed alienbbc

I'm not sure what alienbbc is, but AFAIK it's not important for installing
    mplayer

that doesn't sound good, probably you should re-install

mplayer is actually part of Mandrake proper I think. The PLF packages are
different, because they contain versions with additional options for mplayer
that may be politically hot potatoes for mandrakesoft...

Urpmi (and derivatives) is the command you'll need here...

you could try some stuff to see where you're at:

    - open a konsole (or xterm or rxvt, <star> -> System -> Terminals -> RXvt)
    - become root (su -) (unless you already are, but you are not using the desktop as root are you? ;-)
    - type "urpmq --list-media" and see what you've got setup as urpmi sources
    - if you have something there, try the command "urpmi mplayer"
    - or else if you don't have any urpmi sources, try the following commands:

    urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://plf.time4t.net/pub/plf/mandrake/10.1 with hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia --update proxad-updates ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributio...1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia proxad-main ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributio...586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia proxad-contrib ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributio.../media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia --update ie-updates ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.mand...1/main_updates with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia ie-main ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.mand...586/media/main with media_info/hdlist.cz
    urpmi.addmedia ie-contrib ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.mand.../media/contrib with media_info/hdlist.cz

you may not need all of them, but the updates, main and contrib and possibly
    the plf source are necessary.

Of course you need a speedy internet connection to do this in any acceptable
time, the hdlist files are BIG (tens of MBs).

when this has all gone well, try the "urpmi mplayer" command...
and do "urpmi lame" as well, especially if you added the plf source....

another source for packages is http://www.eslrahc.com/ from Charles Edwards.

    it's quite fun, though ;-)

Mandrake Linux is really a quite complete OS plus applications, but URPMI is
very important for installing packages and updates ("urpmi.update -a"
followed by "urpmi --auto-select" will update your system, at least all but
    the kernel.)

From the command line, as root, verify that lame is installed:

    rpm -qa|grep -i lame

If it is installed and you suspect there is a problem with it, remove it:

    urpme lame

    Now install lame: urpmi lame

One more thing that I encountered when installing alienbbc. Go to
/usr/local/slimserver and make sure that the files "alienstream" and
"transcoder_proxy.pl" are owned by the same user as the rest of the
files in that directory and that they are both executable. If not,
alienbbc will not work because of permission issues.

I was unable to make Mandrake or PLF's mplayer package work with
alienbbc, and had to compile from source. It's not difficult at all, and
I've been toying with the idea of making a Mandrake-ready
mplayer+alienbbc package available (if that's legal to do).

    Mplayer on mandrake

    that would be great.

it was after mucking around with mplayer/alienbbc that i hosed my mandrake
10 install and had to start over. of course it probably had more to do with
my noobiness than anything being wrong with these programs.
