I think you're being obtuse now. No USB device that offers a choice of power inputs would be certified as a USB device if it allowed the multiple power lines to be bridged to each other under any circumstances.

Have to say I've never seen a usb HDD with a 5v input though as all the portable drives generally run straight off the USB port, and all the desktop drive ones run off 12V.

Yes, It's great when it works, but it doesn't work great all that often.
Processor power and available RAM. There's hardly any ram, that's the biggest issue wrt stability. It's also stuck with an ancient version of LMS.

    Yes, good point.

Mine has a 5v input, although it may just be the housing and not actually be connected. I'll give it a try.

.. and no web-UI and no plugins and it’s slooow and scaning is slooow and then it crashes when out of ram.

Be carefull to not mouth a to large colllection a modest library on a usb stick migth be usable.

The whole idea afiak was an afterthought when someone saw that it migth just be possible to run LMS on Touch .
If it had been in the design scope from the beginning it would have been more powerful cpu and ram in it.

It was not an afterthought - the expectation was there from the beginning based on the fact at the time LMS was running on devices such as Linksys NSLU2 (266MHz, 32Mb ram). However, development took longer than expected, as all parts of system didn't perform as well as expected/hoped - the SoC, Linux, UI and there was a lot of time spent on making performance acceptable. The price point determined the specs of the h/w. In the end, Radio was released before Touch becauase Touch was maybe at least 6 months late. Lots of effort was put into getting LMS going on Touch as I think it was a design promise and couldn't be dropped.

Ok was it really in the desig scope from day one ? Maybe they should have dropped it ? Its such letdown for LMS .

Touch is great player ( i have 3 i love them ), but releasing the server on Touch then people expect it to work just as good as any LMS server .

And apparently some folks still expect it to perform .
If it where not there it would not have wasted everyones time .

Its impressive as its almost 10 years old . With todays SoC would probably cost less and just works.
Every squeezebox seems to be ahead of its time .

Remember the times, Logitech just acquired Slimdevices 2006 with a product plan Duet, Touch, Radio.
Logitech provide expertise &cost mgmt in manufacturing in China - so Touch h/w and inventory was probably already built in mid 2009 - can't change h/w spec. Product launch details would already been released to Logitech staff for training etc.. also probably in mid 2009 A small company can change quickly - big one not so easily.
2008 - Crash - consumer spending down. So sales not as good as expected in 2010 and probably upgraded spec would have to wait until inventory sold.

How many people would be happy using their iPhone 1 today - remember on 1st release No Apps - not even SMS.
