Hi,
Years ago I investigated several Android clients but finally concluded
that the official Logitech client did the best job on my tablets and phones.
However, this client is showing its age. The UI is a bit unstable and
sometimes taps are not correctly processed. It seems not to run under the
newest Android versions.
AFAIK, we do not have the sources for this client so there's little we can
do. What other client would be a good replacement?
Rejects so far:
SqueezeCommander: Dead (last release 2011).
Orange Squeeze: Cannot try (no preview/lite version). Seems to have
no tablet UI.
Squeezer: No tablet UI. Too limited.
Squeeze Controller: No tablet UI. Too limited.
Squeeze Ctrl: Cannot try. Expensive, and tablet mode requires additional
in-app purchase.
Squeezebox Remote: Only works via mysqueezebox.com.

Can't you try every Android App for 15 minutes?

Actually, it's two hours.
That won't help if the desired functionality requires an (additional)
in-app purchase. Refunding an in-app purchase is left to the discretion of
the developer.
In general, I like to try things out at my own pace. I've purchased many
Android apps after a couple of days or weeks, but seldom within hours.

Orange squeeze can use a grid layout with multiple columns which is quite nice on a tablet.

Then it looks like you are left with no options.

Sorry, but Squeeze Ctrl is imho the best option here. Even if it's expensive, but it's worth the money. Afaik it's also the only one that gets maintained regularily. And it works on Android Wear and shows a Now Playing screen on Chromecast

Yea, but the OP doesn't want to buy anything he can't test indefinitely for free and is not happy with the free options so he'll have to buy a new hardware which I'm sure will be much cheaper than one of these horribly expensive Apps.

I said I like to test at ease, not under time pressure. So I first liked to
hear your experiences with Android clients
According to the mostly serious reactions here, Squeeze Ctrl seems the best
alternative, so I'm going to spend some time and money on that one. The
only thing that bothers me is a remark about "This app can be quite
demanding on the server compared to other controller apps and as such may
not work well with a server running on a NAS. Complaints in the reviews
about slowness is likely due to having the server on a NAS. This is
especially true if you have a large library (more than 10000 songs)".
I'm running LMS on a Pi2 and have over 30000 songs. Although the UI (via
the web, and via the LMS Android client) is sometimes a bit slow, it
doesn't really disturb me. I wonder if that is going to be different with
Squeeze Ctrl.
