I replied to JoeMuc2009 privately, wherein I thanked him for his kind offer, but could not take it because I live in the USA. I told him of my plan to get some better tools and try some micro-surgery. It took a while and a lot of patience, but I was successful in re-connecting my front panel.
I then proceeded to try the diode fix, and it worked!
I have documented the details of the micro-surgery on my personal blog.
Re-reading Joe's instructions, I do not know how I missed the point that it was a ribbon cable to pull out, not a connector. It's pretty obvious now, and I should have understood it then.
