Most common case of stream sounding slow is when a 48kHz stream is played at 44.1Khz.
A ripped CD will be at 44.1kHz so to make it sound slow is unusual.
Knowing exactly how slow it is being played might provide a clue - compare expected track duration against how long it takes to play through...

The issue could be the card is reporting wrong speed capability to squeezelite (via ALSA)

What is the format of your test streams/files ?
Is the sound slow for both 44.1kHz stream and 48kHz files/streams these are sample rates not bit rate ?

If streams stop totally, that usually means the "station" closes down the connection. You have using different types of source (i.e. Spotify, Sound Cloud, Podcast and Radio). I wonder whether there are a few different problems with same symptoms.

Describing the glitches would help identify the likely source of the problem.

Do "glitches" only occur when streaming from network and not when playing from files ?
Are players synchronised when glltches occur ?

If it is possible, you'd have to modify some files on the controller. Patching files is easy on Radio and Touch as there is a serial port or ssh access. I'm not sure about ssh access to a controller. The alternative might be files can be patched using a boot script on the memory card.

Checking for the audio glitches, I let a France Musique station play for a few hours - I got the 597 message. I think this is mainly a France Musique/FIP station issue but I'll monitor some more....

I have played the FMIJ jazz stream as well with LMS 8.4 and PLUGIn 2.10 - while I didn't get your error, I have noticed a number of audio glitches. I feel the audio glitches shouldn't happen so maybe there is something else not quite right....

Any 5xx error usually means a source issue (i.e. radioframce servers) - but "broken pipe" is very odd. Do you have a simple network (i.e. PCP -> Router -> internet) or is it "complicated" with bridges,extenders,VLANS,...

What URL are you trying to play ?
What version of LMS ?
What OS is running on ?
What version of PlayHLS ?
If V1.* what version of ffmpeg ?...

If the error is only happening when you are NOT streaming, then perhaps using the "-C" command line option may be a work around. IIRC The "-C x" closes the output device after x seconds if not being used. This means when squeezelite will not check output device when no in use....

If it is a USB issue (e.g mechanical - short signal drop) - a message might appear in dmesg - I don't recall seeing any comments on whether you checked dmesg.

The changes since 1416 don't look to be in the "output" area. I think the changes might be related to directly streamed...

I think the "timeout" error message is the origin of the problem.

Squeezelite is using ALSA to check if there are still PCM frames ready to be output but ALSA timeout out after 1 sec with no reponse and no error message...

On the same System. I can play the URL below using ffplay but not from "tune-in" on LMS. With LMS I get a 403 forbidden.
