a) what capacity powerbank (mAh)?
b) roughly what duration of portable playback do you get from a full charge?

Well, mine are all old Anker units, 10000mAH (max output 3.0 amps).

It has two 5 Volt outputs but the both don't supply 3 amps each

So I would say you want 5 volts at 3 amps through at least one output, as the current draw is often greater at power on.

I have some older ones which allow "pass through" which means they can be charged at the same time they are being used.

Non are modern enought to have "Smart" connections so I don't know if that feature will be a help or hindrance.

Length of use depends on volume and workload put upon the rapberry pi, also the impedance of the headphones. (that's a techie as I get )

Are you near to Dingwall at all ?

I use an Anker 20100 which Amazon say can supply up to 4.8A. It has four blue leds indicating the state of charge. I tend to recharge mine when it gets down to 2 leds showing. Can't say how long it would run till the battery was flat, haven't tried using that way. I did buy my (very short) USB lead from Anker, no use having a cheap, longer than needed USB lead absorbing some of the power.

The Khadas Tone Board is an incredibly good DAC for its price but decent cases are difficult to find. The best one I found was Audiophonics

My latest portable but HiFi quality player.
Pi Zero W with pCP velcroed onto a Getihu power bank with Audioquest Dragonfly. I’ve been using it for about 6 hours so far and it’s used just 4% of the power. Started at 83%.
It fits into a small carry case. The power bank has an on/off switch and 2 USB out with separate USB-C that is both in and out.

No screen required as it’s controlled by my phone. Why not just use the phone? Both iPhone and Android carry compromises.

iOS. iPeng will play 24/96 happily with the Dragonfly attached but you need to use a Lightning to USB adapter. I’ve tried all sorts but the one constant is that they fail after a period of use. They require an Apple authorised chip in the Lightning end and it’s this that is the weak area. Also iPeng doesn’t support crossfade.

Android. Although the Android audio subsystem can handle 24/192 neither of the existing SB player apps seem to be able to use it beyond 16/48. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Well, the battery HAT never arrived from China, so went another direction, using a case and battery meant for gamers. Fun little project, if impractical. Haven't tested the battery duration, but expect an hour or two before it has to go back on charge. A magnetic micro-usb charger cable would make it a tiny bit more practical. No output at the moment, just a simple controller. The joystick is pretty nifty to use with the cap on.
