  • External Battery For Touch ?

Anyone know of an off-the-shelf rechargeable battery pack that would reliably power a Touch for a few hours?

I don't have a Touch, but I found that it's external power supply delivers 5V. This would mean that you can use any decent "Power Bank" product. Power Banks are used to recharge mobile phones when not having access to a wall outlet. They typically consist of a 3.7V Li-ion battery and a built-in DC-DC converter that converts 3.7V battery voltage to 5V output voltage. These power banks can be charged with standard mobile phone chargers. You would also need an USB to DC jack plug (with correct diameter) adapter cable to connect the power bank to your Touch.

EDIT: When googling for "Squeezebox Touch current consumption" I found this forum post that mentions that current consumption of the Touch is typical 380mA, and circa 500mA worst case with maximum screen brightness. Power Bank capacity normally specifies the capacity of the internal 3.7V Li-ion battery. Rough calculation of play time with a low cost 5000mAh (fully charged) power bank, assuming worst case 500mA current consumption from the 5V output of the power bank becomes then:
5000mAh/500mA * 3.7/5 * 0.9 = 6.66 hours. In this calculation I have assumed conversion from 3.7V to 5V with 90% efficiency. Power banks with larger capacity will give longer play time. Also lowering the screen brightness will help to increase battery life.

Pretty sure these will work. Pick whichever fits your power bank:

      USB A
      USB C

Interesting application, but a touch doesn't make sound. Your amp/powered speakers would need to be battery powered as well. How ya going to use it agbagb? I'm curious.

It seems to me that a phone/tablet running sb player or squeezeplay would do the same thing as the touch with an extended battery life. Plus, you could bluetooth to powered speakers.

But I am probably missing something 🤷‍♂️

The Touch does have a headphone output, so you could listen via headphone or earplugs. But I agree that it would be easier to use a smartphone or tablet (running squeezeplayer or similar app), since these are already battery powered by themselves.

Idle curiosity, really ....... When the Radio is problematic (WiFi 6 issues) but is sometimes used by the family as a battery operated unit, I could imagine a battery Touch wired to a battery speaker. Portability as such is no the issue - there are some listening locations outdoors that don't easily have power. The LMS world via the Touch remote or the Radio control panel is a "known thing", for those older members who don't really use their smartphone for streaming or for getting into our local LMS database....

I use iPeng on iPhone as Squeezebox player, connected to portable Bluetooth speaker for such situations. I assume android has a similar control/player app.

If your Radio has a battery then you could power the Vonets with a battery pack.

Agree, familiarity is huge. I think we take it for granted. I am currently trying to transition my wife from getting up and walking over to our sb's to picking up her phone. She's making progress

There was a logitech squeezebox control app at one time, not sure if it's still in the store. The nice thing for familiarity is it exactly mimicked the sb Ui menu structure, look, even down to the teal color of the menus.

Unfortunately, it stopped working back around Android 7. I don't see it in the Play Store anymore.

We were discussing that possibility in another nearby thread ....... and we were unsure a) whether it would work, or b) how to actually wire it ......

                      Ideas?

Well I haven't actually seen a Vonets device but doesn't it have a USB connection to plug into the power pack?

To make my SB Radio (which has a battery) somewhat portable while using a TP-link nano router I used a battery pack for the Wi-Fi. See the following link for a picture.

What he is saying is how to use the sb radio battery pack for powering both the vonet and the radio. It would be a nice thing to figure out, but there are things that have to be considered technically. So, it would be nice to have the schematic of the radio for the battery connections. 5 wires, two are pwr/gnd, and two are voltage sense (I think), what is the 5th).

I actually have a battery pack with the casing stripped here (long story) so I could draw up a scheme for the cells, components and wired, but what they do is another question.

I have been meaning to draw up the schematic, so if it would be helpful, that's a motivation

Well my reference to battery pack referred to a separate USB battery pack, sorry if it wasn't clear. My comment wouldn't really have made any sense otherwise 😀
