    Touch "Average" Volume Level

I tend to listen to music from my Touch with no auto replay gain applied, volume set to 100%, and adjust the volume to suit on my amp.

I notice that the volume from the touch in this configuration is noticeably lower (so at least 3dB) when compared with other line sources, so the question arises, is there anyway in the software/plugins etc to force the Touch output higher?

I have tried auto gain but I find that it generally lowers the overall volume of everything, this is fine on my SB radios, but on my Touch I prefer things a little louder.

No worries if this can't be done, I can always turn the volume up a little, or put a small gain stage in the Touch line feed, just curious to know.

Is this present when playing your local library or just the online services?

There is remote streams gain (I think default at - 5db) setting which applies to Internet radio and most likely online streaming spotty Tidal etc..

Tbh I probably had similar reflection with one of my SB touch which is connected to amp next to other (louder) sources some point in past.. Hmm

The remote stream gain is only applied if replaygain is enabled though.

The analogue output is similar to a CD player

Measured at its RCA output jacks, the Squeezebox Touch's maximum output level at 1kHz was 2.06V, which meets the CD standard. The output preserved absolute polarity (ie, was non-inverting), and was sourced from an impedance of 599 ohms at high and midrange frequencies

So if all the volume software is set at 100% there should be little difference

To which input is it connected on the amplifier, and to which other input sources are you making the comparison?

            Which amplifier are you using?

              It's a home made valve amp, class A, ECC83, EL34.

So I know all the inputs are the same 'cos I made it! It's a simple matter to put a bit more gain in the SBT pre amp stage, I was just curious if there was an adjustment in the touch/LMS, it appears not.

Thanks all for looking into this :-)

Out of curiosity which sources are louder than the Touch?

Another thought came to mind. What is the input impedance of your amp? I had an Arcam Alpha 9 at one point with an input impedance of 5kohms. Switching the Tape Monitor on and off used to give a noticeable change in volume.

There is volume setting on the Touch for 100% output

and also in LMS Player Audio Settings

Zin is very high as it's a valve stage, it's basically the grid leak resistor in parallel with the volume cct, so somewhere around 100k.

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions on this, I resolved it in the end by putting more gain in my pre-amp stage and switching smart gain back on.

All working well for me now except one tiny thing, remote streams are a bit loud cw local music.

Someone mentioned a remote stream gain setting, I can't seem to find it, can anyone point me to it?

                        Thanks!

I find -7 is a good place to start.

Ahh yes, thanks Slarti, it's buried under player settings, extra, audio in material. Found it now, will give it a whirl.
