I had a the very modestly priced C.A. DacMagic hooked up to mine and felt it made quite a noticeable improvement.

+1 for the DACMagic. It sounds great with all sources and definitely greatly improves the receiver's sound.

Are you using any of the processing in your Onkyo? If so, remember that if you run an external DAC, you need to run an unprocessed path through your receiver (direct?), or you will end up having the receiver re-digitize, process, and then use its own DACs anyway. I believe this processing also includes the subwoofer crossover if you use a 2.1 mode from your AV receiver.

I have the Onkyo 608 and a SB3. I found the sound much more pleasant if I use the analog out instead of the digital on SB3.

If the Onkyo is using the internal DAC on both analog and digital input there should not be any sound difference?

All modes on the Onkyo includes subwoofer crossover except Pure and Direct.

yeah i'm using the t-link digital so that means that i'm using the onkyo's dac right,if i went analog it would be using logitech's dac?

                    Yes.

If tcutting is right it will be using Onkyo's anyway. But since I can hear difference between the two inputs I'm not so sure.

It would use both DAC's if receiving an analog input. Digital AVR's basically use their DAC, somewhere, for processing.
Some AVR's use some bypass paths like "Pure Direct" to limit the digital processing in the AVR. But then you loose things like bass management and eq/peq etc.. which are usually handled by a DSP, requiring digital processing.

Try both outs (analog & digital) from your SB player, see which you prefer. It is very easy to ABX compare audio on an AVR by simply using different input sources.
All SB3 and Touch audio outs are always active.

My SB3 into my Yamaha AVR I prefer the SB3's digital out utilizing the Yamaha's Burr-Brown DAC (SB3 uses a different Burr-Brown DAC).
My Touch into the same AVR I prefer the Touch's analog out.

one more quick question,my receiver light always stays red(booting up)i have a linksys e3200 router using ethernet and it also sees the receiver, everything seems to be working, web center sees my receiver,so does squeeze server,i can play music fine,if it isn't broke don't fix it?,lol, just curious as to why it's always red

The red LED sounds strange. If it works, you can leave it alone. If you want to try to fix it, you probably need to do a full reset of the receiver. That is as if it were new, and hold down button to get to fast-flashing RED. You need the controller (don't know if you need to do full reset/reconfig of controller too). OR, you could for sure reset the receiver and use net-udap tool to reconfigure the receiver network settings.
