  • No wi fi connection on squeezebox boom

I am HK from India, I have a squeezebox boom, sometimes back suddenly wi fi connection stopped, when I click on ' connect wi fi' it gets restart, though I can work with lan connection but if I can restart wi fi connection, will be happy to use it.
    kindly help.

I don't have my boom handy, and am unclear of the process (what you are describing), but I'll give you a few things to try.

    1) Try to factory reset (hard reset) your boom. Unplug the adaptor, press and hold the '+' key, plug in the adaptor, when you see life, release the '+', go through the instructions.

    2) Try resetting your router, maybe do this before 1)

    3) Finally, without fully understanding what you are or are not seeing, perhaps replacing the power supply (the wall adaptor) might help. They are getting old, and a common way for cheap switching supplies to fail is their inability to deliver the required current (causing a drop in voltage). In your description you mention "when I click...it gets restart". If you mean that you click to connect and the boom goes dark then restarts, this could be due to what I describe. They are cheap if they are available to you

Thanks Redrum for so quick response.
I have already tried to factory reset even for many times.
Squeezbox boom can be factrry reset by remote & even on player factory reset setting is given.
Router is working fine & using wifi on another equipment like mobile phone etc.
Nothing with main power supply as squeezebox boom is still working on ethernet connection.
Only problem is I am not able to connect it with wifi as when I click to connect on wifi on player it gets re-start.
This has happened suddenly with this player a few months back when I was setting static ip address with wifi connection on player.
Something wrong with program ic as player doesnnt show mac address now.
Earlier someone on slim device blog said it happens when main ic fails on mother board.
Thanks once again for kind response.

It might still be the power supply - using WiFi will make the Boom try to pull more power from the supply and perhaps it cannot supply the extra any more.
However, if you do not see the MAC address then you may well be right.
Changing the WiFi card is possible. Also ... if you have been carrying it from place to place then it is possible that the card has partially slipped out of its socket.

Thanks Paul for very quick response.
I keep my player only at one place.
As MAC address has gone, someone earlier said it's due to program ic & without MAC address wifi can not be connected.
Even if it is due to wifi card or wifi antenna, there is no one to repair/ replace in India.
Even Logitech customer service centre in India doesn't support for old models, they advise to buy new model .
I am still interested to open / dismantle player just to check wifi antenna but bit nurvus.
Is there any proper guide how to open squeezebox boom?
          Thanks once again,

Detailed instructions on how to get inside ... from JoeMuc2009
Tired of seeing this? No question, the Squeezebox Boom is a fabulous device. However, some small mistakes in the design as wel...

This is for a different repair - but you will see the WiFi card in the pictures.

Edit: Paul just got ahead of me.

If PSU is OK, then two choices.
              1. If Ethernet port works OK - then get a Ethernet WIfi adaptor (e.g. Vonets VAP-11g-300 but needs a separate PSU as Boom is not 5V) edit: Vonets web site says 5V-15V is OK so check Boom PSU voltage .
              2. Replace WLAN card

The wifi card (WLAN) is a separate plugin card within the Boom and can be replaced by a careful user with a few tools.
The WLAN card was widely used in laptops in 2000's and so second hand units arer availabel on ebay etc.

Replacing the card in a SB3 is a very simple task. Replace the card in the in Boom is a bit more difficult - there are a few small connectros whuich are very delicate and if broekn hard to rerpair.

The link below is about replacing the Boom's VFD display - it is useful as it shows how to open Boom and get access to WLAN card. The WLAN card is the green card with the large white sticker with letters FC. Specifically look at the phot where the text talk about the antenna. (Heading "Preparing the Mainboard"

The WLAN card is socketed - two side clips release it. The antenna are glued to mainboard but are socketed on WLAN card.

This link provides details on replacement WLAN card

I agree with Paul Webster that it's still worth trying a different power supply. I don't know about your area , but they are readily available an inexpensive in the US. The power demand causing droop is common on a failing supply is common with an old supply. You say the boom remains stationary, probably plugged in 24/7 for years, generating heat.

It's also (IMO) one of the first things to check when "it just started happening". There have been ALOT of people looking for help here (with 15 year old devices) where the power supply was the answer. If it's not, consider it preventative maintenance

I don't have a boom at this location, but I am travelling today and can check out which step is failing for you (so I can understand better what you are seeing), otherwise, good instructions from bpa and Paul, and JoeMuc2009 is the boom repair expert here.

                  All dear friends!
I am really very grateful to all of you who have deeply taken interest in the problem & advised very carefully.
I would try one by one.
First , easiest thing to try another power adaptor .
After going through sites given by you all for how to open sb player, I might try to get it repaired.
Right now it works very well on ethernet
I use TP Link wifi extender to get LAN connection to work on ethernet connection.
As, MAC is now not available, there might be a problem with program ic too.
Thanks once again to you all,
                  HK
