    Boom speaker repair

    Hello,

If you read further, it says "Unbranded, generic" - there are many Boom
replacement speakers on eBay, some are better quality and copies than
    others.

Logitech still has replacement parts for this, I believe.

Have you tried Logitech before getting a no-name generic replacement from
    China?

    Regards,

    djringjr

    Boom speaker repair

Alas, one of my 3 Booms has exhibited signs of woofer damage. I've purchased replacement speakers (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...&condition=all). Before reassembling the Boom I am wondering about the coating on screws attaching the speakers. Does it have something to do with aspects of the sound? If so, what is an appropriate replacement? I fear that if I use epoxy I may not be able to get the screws out again should future repair become necessary. Would silicone caulk be acceptable?

The above mentioned speakers do fit, but they are not a direct replacement. For one they are a small bit shallower. Additionally, I had to grind material away from two of the speaker mounting ears. I also had to grind a bit of plastic away from a rib on the Boom near one of the mounting bosses. Even at that, the speaker does not fit flush with the housing. A small air gap remains. I filled that gap with a squishy material (silicone tubing), being careful to not come in contact with the speaker surround. One minor addition is that the mounting holes are larger and do require that washers be used under the screw heads.

Since ordering the above speakers I found on ebay what appears to be old stock of the original Boom speakers (https://www.ebay.com/itm/13209935855...=true#shpCntId). Their photo shows a Logitech part number which matches that on my speakers. However, dimensions provided indicate a height of 6.3 cm. The speakers in my Boom measured 6.07 cm, in which case the speakers would probably be too deep to fit. I queried the vendor and the reply was that the dimensions indicated were correct.
Now, questions arise, is the photo depicted that of the speaker actually being shipped or is the dimension actually incorrect? Another concern is that, if as some say, failure of the Boom speakers is a result of age rather than usage, these replacements may fail in a short period of time.

Perhaps I'll experiment with replacing the surrounds in the removed speakers in preparation for the potential failure of my other two Booms.

The Boom I am repairing has been running most of the day, most every day for 9 years. Volume is set to a relatively moderate level and I never listen to heavy bass. It is in a household environment and out of direct sun.

I chose to replace the speakers rather than to repair the existing ones because it looked originally to be the easier and less risky route.

      A few thoughts......

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner. My speakers are the same height that you mention, about 6.1, not 6.3 and the 6.1 includes the 'rubber' washer/spacer that is glued to the bottom of the speaker. I am sure that you looked at the ebay seller's info; if you click on the "See Full Item Description" there are a few other pictures of the item, one of which shows several dimensions, each of which match the speaker here on my desk, EXCEPT the height. Note also that the manufacture's sticker on one of the pics shows Logitech and the correct part number. I am going to speculate that the 6.3 is incorrect.

However, I have replaced the surrounds and the speakers sound great on that unit and have now for a few years (more, I hope). On my first one, I also used 'replacement speakers' and had to do some cutting and pasting. These speakers work fine, sound pretty good, but certainly do not have the 'presence' or bass of the originals, or the originals with new surrounds.

I think that the coating on the screws was probably some hot glue to keep the screws from vibrating out. When I put mine back together, I put a drop of Loctite thread locker on it. So far, so good.

Good luck with the 'new' or renewed speakers!

The Speakers on ebay, see above link

On a whim I bought two of these, arrived today.

They seem exact, the 'new' ones the exact same size and height, EXCEPT: when measuring for my last post, to compare to what BobHy stated, I was measuring the height to the rim of the speaker housing, not including the added height of the Surround. (My speaker had the surround removed, awaiting a new one.....). So this is where the 'confusion' might have come in, as when you add the small amount of the added height of the surround, the 6.3 seems correct.

But, the metal frame/housing seems/measures exactly, the Logitech sticker has the part number correct, and the construction materials seem exactly the same.

        FYI & FWIW.

So these ebay speakers should be a drop in replacement? I haven't used my Boom since the woofer damage developed on my player and since I am not super handy I was not confident in attempting any of the other repair techniques described in these forums. I guess it could be easier if these are the exact same speakers right?

I don't have a boom open right now, but I have to replace the driver(s) in one of mine, when I can get to it. The speakers I have out for repair were to be refoamed when I got to it. I plan to do those, then open up the 'bad' boom and proceed, possibly with these new ones.

So with that info, I can tell you that sitting side by side there is no difference between the ebay speakers and the original ones from my boom. Except, the boom speakers have a rubber/plastic washer/spacer on the bottom, which I would take off the old ones and stick to the new ones. There is every indication that they're an exact match.

I ordered a pair with leads, but all the leads are is a separate 2 pieces of wire with push on connectors that fit over the terminals already on the speakers.

They are not needed for installing in the boom.

Me too, exactly. I didn't know what they were, so also got them. I haven't had time to install, so I don't know if they're ok; should be.....
