Just for old times' sake.

Who could have imagined that Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard would be among the last surviving 50s rockers? Both of them managed to last into the 2020s, even though they both seemed to belong to the "live fast/die young" school of thought.

I spoke to Jerry Lee Lewis once, and he didn't even try to hit me or shoot me, or anything! It must have been in the summer of 1972. He had just finished an appearance at a wrestling arena in a small Georgia town. Earlier, his guitarist at the time, Buddy Church, had told me how he would be careful to reposition himself after the first verse of the finale, "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," so as to be out of the flight path of the piano bench.

Jerry Lee followed the piano bench off the stage a few minutes after that happened, and he walked past me backstage. His shirt was off by then, so he could mop the sweat from his face with it. As he walked by, I said, "Keep on shaking!" He glanced my way, apparently only slightly annoyed, and said, "Man, it's a hot one!"

That's the entirety of my encounter with the late Jerry Lee Lewis.

I couldn't help notice that it was a plagiarized album cover from 30 years earlier:



I might be a bit late to the party though as another 37 years have passed since Nilsson released the second album.

The Sinatra album is my favourite Sinatra Album with Frank at his peak and great arrangements by Nelson Riddle. I have about 60 of Nelson Riddle's collaboration albums after becoming a fan in 1984 when I was fortunate enough to see the great man in concert with Linda Ronstadt at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland. He died the following year.

I didn't like Sinatra as a teenager in the 60's and then I became disconnected from the music scene as I travelled around for nearly thirty years, but buying a Squeezebox V2 in 2005 has kindled an insatiable interest in music and I'm particularly interested in the hi-fi (post 1955) recordings from the American music scene, much of which wasn't readily available here in the UK in those years.

I've been listening to Innse Gall by Joshua Bonnetta. It's an LP of field recordings assembled as a soundtrack to a film about the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Bonnetta was there for a period making all these recordings later assembled into this LP. It's a lovely presentation with a 60 page photo book and the film for download (I'm travelling and haven't had an opportunity to download that yet). In style, it's kind of like Chris Watson's field recordings.

I'm very fond of the Outer Hebrides, having taken several holidays touring the islands on a tandem bike - haven't been for a few years and this makes me want to return.
