  • This album turned 25 last week. It is my favorite by U2 and one that will finally be (re)released on vinyl this month. An underrated gem that is perhaps the most un-U2 they ever sounded.

I can listen to the title track on repeat for hours at a time sometimes.

            • Public Image - Concert - Live at the Brixton Academy 27.5.86
This is a live album recorded I think around the time Album was released, but not itself released until this year. It kicks off with an instrumental version of Kashmir, with Lydon coming in with a jaunty 'hello'. But his interaction with the audience goes downhill from there, as some in the audience persistently spat at the band. So, rather an interesting live album!

              • That PIL album above reminds me of the live album released by Suicide in 1978 - my LP copy has a plain white sleeve - entitled 21½ Minutes in Berlin/23 Minutes in Brussels, which must be the most confrontational live album in my collection. The side recorded in Brussels ends with the band being harassed off stage by a remarkably hostile crowd, which cheers as the band give up.

                    • Leftover Salmon - Bridges to Bert (1997) An interesting collection of music. Uses a lot of accordion and seems to be a mix of reggae, bluegrass with some blues/pop thrown in for good measure. Overall I'd give it at least 4 of 5 stars.

Love Bromberg. I have most of his albums and have seen him live many times (small band and big band). I'm seeing him in a few weeks performing solo. Can't wait.

The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues by David Bromberg

Saw David the other night at Hugh's Room in Toronto. Nothing beats live music, but in its absence we've got some pretty fine albums.

He was playing in quintet form at Hugh's, a cracking band. Particularly notable were guitarist Mark Cosgrove and fiddler Nate Grower. David has said he doesn't play the way he used to (when he was a go-to sideman, played with Dylan, the Dead and many others, co-wrote with George Harrison, etc etc), before he had a two decade hiatus from performing, but plays now with more nuance, less speed, more time to think. Excellent player on acoustic and electric slide. Cosgrove provides some of the speed chops, phenomenal, and Grower, normally a bluegrass kind of guy, plays the fiddle like it was an electric guitar. Both electifying. David sings well, has kind of come into his own like many older blues guys, except he sings with a Jewish Philly accent and cadence, instead of the south or Chicago.

Thought the photos were interesting. The old b/w was taken by Robert Altman back in 1974, and the newer one is from this year at a festival (Bettye Lavette was on his arm, but I cropped her out to take the size down).

Had to delete original post, something was awry in the way it was displayed, this is a repost.
