♪ I'm listening to Eno, Needles In The Camel's Eye from Here Come The Warm Jets

I digitised my vinyl copy of this a week or two ago. Now listening on a pair of AKG headphones in bed.

It's quite an unusual album if you aren't familiar with it. Not ambient.

I was listening to one of my "Alternate Takes" playlists, two or more versions of the same song played one after the other. This was the "N" series, and included Norwegian Wood by the Beatles. The Beatles version was the CD version of the original stereo release, and my first thought upon hearing it for the first time in a long while was how appallingly bad the mix was!

Very artificial left/right separation, with all the lead vocal in the right channel, the sitar in the left. Harsh and jangling.

So I queued up the Mono and 24-bit versions, the first from the Mono box set (remastered but mimicking the original mono releases for the most part), the latter from the green-apple-with-a-USB-stick version, remastered for more modern stereo sound. I don't remember whether I down-sampled to 16/44 or not, although it doesn't matter much since I could never tell the difference between 24 and 16 bit.

I was astounded how much better the song sounded in mono. The stereo remaster was also vastly superior to the original stereo, but to my ear was still no match for the mono version.

The "alternate take" was a cover by jazz singer Patricia Barber, a live recording. Excellent crisp recording, very well sung, instrumentation mainly jazz piano. Very nice indeed.

Once again this is my vinyl copy ripped to FLAC. It really is one of the best best ofs I know of. The vinyl version (double LP) has one more track (Heartbreaker) than the CD version. Neither has Wishing Well on it which is odd.

I really like the music but have some difficulties with Mick's voice for this kind of music. He doesn't have a "blues voice" and it doesn't do right to the songs.

You mentioned loudness aside; while listening to the album on iTunes I can't judge the loudness. How bad is it?
Hope it's not in the same league as the latest Bowie album because that just kills the complete album...
