    Playlist Hierarchy / Groups / Sub-folders?

Are there any plans to add a playlist hierarchy? That is, the ability to have playlists grouped together in various sub-folders. I use MediaMonkey for music organization and it is nice to have playlist groups for each family member. This would be a little messy as a long flat list in LMS. Thanks.

I tried to use an iTunes library since it is supported by LMS and iTunes allows for playlist groups/folders. It turns out that LMS imports all the playlists in the sub-group/folder and then also imports a playlist representing the playlist group itself apparently containing all the songs in the child playlists? I hope that this can eventually be handled better by allowing playlist groups in LMS.

So, are there no plans to support playlist groups? If so, I am surprised and disappointed given the flexibility in browsing other parts of the library.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we used to be able to put playlists into subfolders, but it went away a long time ago. With Dynamic Playlists (plugin) you can create a hierarchy.

If it is something you want to see added, you will have to go to http://bugs.slimdevices.com, search for it and vote for it if the request is already there, or file it as a new enhancement request if you don't find it in a search, then rally the forum for votes.

Thanks. I found a bug/request that is exactly what I am looking for: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2612

The only problem is that it was submitted in 2005! I guess it is unlikely it will make it in but I don't see why they wouldn't want to support the iTunes structure and I don't understand how people are dealing with potentially long flat lists of (imported) playlists?

It's disappointing that apparently so few people are interested in this. I have a folder for each family member and it is a pain having to scroll by all the playlists for one person to get to the group of playlists I'm interested in. Not very user friendly...

Have you tried the Dynamic Playlists plugin that MeSue suggested? Even though its main purpose is different from your objective, it does address the issue of having a hierarchy of playlist folders.

As for why there hasn't been any action on the enhancement request, I imagine that getting only six votes in 6+ years keeps it pretty low on the priority list.

No, I haven't tried Dynamic Playlists yet but I may have to use it eventually. I just have a philosophical problem paying $20 for a plugin given I only spent $28 on a lifetime license for MediaMonkey which does so much more. It also is pretty unbelievable to me that hierarchy support isn't built in given how long LMS has supported iTunes playlists which has allowed playlist groups for some time. And just to complain a little bit more I think this voting system is pretty ridiculous. It pretty much guarantees that most things will not be fixed or enhanced.

It's a bit of a kludge/workaround, but you could put all your playlists in Favorites, which does support a hierarchy of folders.

As for how user input on bugs and features guarantees that nothing will get done, sorry, I don't follow the logic. And experience shows the opposite.

It has been my experience with the few bugs I have reported that they are just completely ignored unless there are enough votes (look at the sheer number of bugs that are unconfirmed/unassigned). The only recourse seems to come on to this forum and beg people to vote for your bug which isn't very effective or reasonable. I would guess that a very small fraction of users/owners even come on this forum at all let alone know how to go into the bug system and vote on or report something.

I'll certainly agree with you on that one. It is a very non-representative and small group of users here and on bugzilla. When I look at the list of bugs that I have reported and/or voted on, a large share have been resolved. I think the big differences are (1) bugs vs enhancement requests, with the former usually getting more attention, and (2) bugs that are clearly replicable vs idiosyncratic issues that appear to be very environment-specific.

And of course, the voting system doesn't rule all. You'll find plenty of cases of bug fixes with few votes because they were so clearly bugs and readily fixable. And other cases of bugs with lots of votes that will never be resolved because they require too much fundamental change in how the software works.

+1 enhancements are rarely considered , reproducible bugs are to a greater extent .

But in would add the iTunes is not great for bug attention either :-/ the integration was originally a third party addition and breaks on regular basis when apple changes anything ( which they seems to do just to break things like this, so LMS is hangin in the coat tails of iTunes there is no cooperation afiak ) , so it's strained as it is .

But at the moment bugzilla seems dysfunctional ?

And actually many of my reported bugs gets fixed eventually and none of the enhancement request ?

                          Hi cncb,

Playlist sub-folders: Something that's been bothering me too. Been messing around for a while with this. Just discovered how to do it and it's really simple:

Right click on Playlists in left hand panel and then select 'New Playlist'
                          Enter name of sub folder
Right click on new sub folder (It'll look like a playlist in terms of the icon) and repeat

                          Keep doing it...

                          Simples !
