  • Control Panel in Tray Icon does not start

    Hi folks,

I have a home server running with Win10 and LMS and everything was working fine. Now I bought new hardware for my home server and reinstalled everything (Windows 10, Logitech Media Server 8.3.1 etc). Same software as on my old hardware. But there is a problem with the new installation:
I have this tray icon in the bottom right and when clicking it then I get the option "Start control panel" ("Systemsteuerung öffnen..." on my german machine):

Name:	image.png
Views:	210
Size:	47.2 KB
ID:	1635000

When I click that, then the splash screen appears and it loads some seconds:

Name:	image.png
Views:	185
Size:	220.2 KB
ID:	1635001

But then this disappears and nothing happens. Usually (on my old machine) then the control panel UI dialog pops up and shows the settings dialog. Now the splash screen just disappears, and I am not able to make it work again.
Interesting enough, the web interface configuration seems to work fine so far.

What I have tried so far:
    • Reinstalled LMS
    • Wiped settings in C:\ProgramData\Squeezebox
    • Copied over the installation from my old machine and also the settings folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Squeezebox and C:\ProgramData\Squeezebox)
    • Rebooted
Nothing worked Any ideas what could be a solution? Thank you!

Oh, I also looked into ther server.log, but I just contains this:
    Code:
    [23-03-27 17:56:40.9395] main::init (377) Starting Logitech Media Server (v8.3.1, 1676361197, Fri Feb 17 06:33:29 WEST 2023) perl 5.014001 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
    No content in the scanner.log.

I could not find any error message at all.

If relevant: I am running 2 Squeezebox Radios.

Have you tried "Open Control Panel as Administrator" ?

I have no idea on what is causing the problem, I don't know if the Control Panel uses a different Port ?

On my windows 10 Pro Desktop, if I go to C > Program Files (x86) > Squeezebox > server and right click squeezeboxcp (run as admin) that opens the Control Panell

or try this (I always do this when installing LMS on Windows)

I'm a long time LMS user. I have v7.9.3 running on an old Windows8 Asus Revo but since that OS has become deprecated I decided to upgrade to a new mini PC (Beelink SEI8, 8th Gen Intel i5-8279U) which came with Windows11. I installed the current stable (LMS 8.3.0) and while it installs fine and initially starts itself as

Thanks for hints! But unfortunately, neither reinstalling using admin rights nor directly running squeezeboxcp as admin made any difference for my issue... So strange... Worked for years without issues. No idea what could be different on this new PC.

Interesting: Installed old version 7.9.3 and opening control panel instantly worked!

              Did not work:
              8.3.1
              8.0.0

So the problem seems to have been introduced with version 8 for me. Any idea what changed with version 8?

Wow, it is working now. I think I found the cause: Some time ago (for other reasons, I enabled UTF-8 support in Windows 10: https://helpcenter.nshift.com/hc/en-...UTF-8-encoding). I just noticed some bad characters in the UI when scanning my library with LMS 7.9.3. So I remembered changing that UTF8 setting. I now turned it off and upgraded again to LMS 8.3.1. And I am now able to actually start control panel with it again

Confirmed. When enable UTF-8 support = enabled, LMS scans all non-latin tracks properly, but LMS control crashes silently on the splash screen. (Almost) Everything else seems to work as expected.
Turning UTF-8 support off causes all tracks with non-latin characters to drop out of the DB.

Does this merit opening a bug on github?
